Hotel de la Tête Noire is a nice place to stay for people interested in archeology. It is nearby the Roman (rebuilt) walls, close to the Rolin Museum with its magnificent Roman mosaics as well as at walking distances of the Roman doors. Clean, quiet - at least in August when everybody is on holidays - with gorgeous breakfast for 10 EUR.

I see what people mean when they complain about unfriendliness at the desk, but I see it as a language barrier. And since it is France, people, the onus is on you to meet them halfway. On our trip, the reception staff seemed a bit flustered by having to try English, but were very friendly when we used our high school French. The only criticism is of the mattress which was way too soft and should be replaced. Otherwise, it was a good choice. The restaurant was quite good, for a mid-range option, and the breakfast was very plentiful and had lots of options.

Unfortunately we only had one night to spend in Autun. Fortunately, we spent it at La Tete Noir. Our room was furnished in 'country charm.' Our room overlooked the street, but it was very quiet even with the window open.
We appreciated the TV channel in English and the internet in our room. The only downside was that the staff person at the reception desk either could not or would not speak English, but my school girl French was sufficient to get us through the transaction.
Autun looked to be a very interesting town with an ancient Roman pedigree still in existence. Aside from the Temple of Janus we were not able to visit any of the other sites.

Nice small town, easy to get to, pay parking in hotel courtyard, otherwise you can leave your car outside in the street. Reception spoke a little English but we were able to manage. The room was large and clean. We did not eat in the hotel restaurant.

It was cold and wet on a Sunday night and that might have affected our impression of Autun as a whole. The town was easy to walk around, ok with shops and restaurants etc, but we felt it was more suitable to service the whole Burgundy wine area around. We did not like it as much as Auxerre and Beaune.
