“Beautiful views, average rooms”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 August 2010

The exterior of the hotel fools you into thinking that it will be more luxurious inside than it actually is. There is no doubt that the exterior is beautiful, and the cloister (where you can sit and watch the sun go down) has stunning views. However, inside, think "Best Western" - completely functional, lacking any style or period features etc. It's a characterless, average hotel. The room was dated but again, average. We only had a one-night stay there so we weren't too bothered, but the best thing about the room was definitely the view rather than the facililties! The hotel itself is clean, but tired. The beds were very comfortable, BUT the pillows were very hard and large - like sleeping with your head on a box. I didn't sleep as a result, and I would suggest that if you stay here, bring your own pillow! However my partner likes high pillows and he was fine.
The dinner was really nice - small portions, but four courses means you are full. It was delicious and we didn't encounter any of the problems with service that others have mentioned. The woman on the check in desk was really friendly, and the younger waiters were really nice and helpful (my partner thought the maitre d was a bit miserable, but to me, he was just a typical French waiter!) and the service wasn't slow at all. However, it was a week night and the hotel wasn't really full or busy, so perhaps when they are stretched, the service might be more of a problem. Our stay was fine, but I would emphasise that it looks like a luxury hotel from the outside, but on the inside, it isn't!

“A world class view wasted on a Motel 6 mentality.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 August 2010

Desk clerk is a control freak who runs around questioning what you are doing. Check-in was painful as we waited awkwardly while desk clerk demanded payment from someone on the telephone. Room resembled a third-rate throwback to 1970's. Breakfast room could just as well be in a school dorm in South Dakota - no view of the mountain forest scenery! Heavy curtains obstructed the million dollar view from the dining room.

“One has to wonder...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 July 2010

One has to wonder about a hotel where only luke warm water came out of the basin's mixer tap whichever way you turned it. The wi-fi internet didn't work and the window was tiny compared with the vastness of the room. Sleep was an airless affair on a hot night.

“Adorable Hotel with Great Views, but Disappointing Rooms”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 June 2010

I got a great deal for a stay here that included dinner, breakfast and wine tasting. We felt it was a good value and I think the price was reasonable for what we got, but I would say it was a lot better value if the room had been nicer.

I was pleasantly surprised by the town of Autun, I thought this was out of the wine country a bit, but it's an adorable little town and the hotel is located on a side street just around the corner from the beautiful cathedral.

The hotel has a gorgeous terrace area that's so peaceful, but if it's hot, the sun is glaring right back at you (if you're looking out the only direction you'd look in, away from the hotel) until 9pm. We were able to get drinks out on the patio and they brought little canapes as well, which were good.

We ate at the hotel, as part of the deal. The food was very good, not excellent, but very good, but the service was very disappointing (and I promise, I’m very used to French service ;) We waited for at least 35 minutes, with our menus closed, and finally the waiter came back to take our order, apologizing, but still. It was so hot in the restaurant (and outside), no air or fans, and we waited that whole time, and even longer, probably 45 minutes, without any drinks, not even water. Finally we ordered wine and water and that came fairly quickly. The other courses were well-timed but it was just the beginning that was really bad. There was one waiter, an older man, who seemed to know what he was doing, but everyone else was much younger and didn’t seem capable of doing anything. My husband finally started pouring his own wine after he was left with an empty glass on 2 occasions for so long.

The room was fine, but a 3-star room for sure, even the upgraded version we stayed in, room 118. It was actually hard to believe it was an upgrade as I can’t imagine how the classic room would be any different. Our room was pretty small and basic as it was. But we did have a lovely view over the terrace so that was worth it. there was a small TV on a little hutch with a sparsely-stocked mini-bar inside, a tiny desk and chair, and a closet behind the door. Otherwise not much space to move around. The bed was fine, but far from the most comfortable I've slept in.

The breakfast was very poor, no croissants, I asked and she said they were in the oven. We arrived at 9am, plenty of time before closing and much of it was already picked over. Regardless, we found enough to choose from but the quality and selection wasn't good.

I should mention that our deal included a tasting at Pommard and this was our best wine tasting of the day. We just mentioned the hotel and our name at the winery and they gave us the tickets, worth €12 each. It was a wonderful tour, our guide was great, very enthusiastic. The grounds are gorgeous and they really do a good job with the tour and tasting. It's always nice when you get something included that is actually the real deal, I also have that to say about the dinner. The quality was very good so I felt like I got my money's worth even though we spent a lot more on wine and other drinks that night.

I would recommend this hotel as a lovely stop if you like sitting outside with a quaint view and enjoying a drink. Hopefully the service will be better for you dinner, because the food was good. Service is pretty good (outside of the restaurants and breakfast), but I would definitely warn that the rooms are pretty basic.

“An unexpected delight”

Contrary to some other reviews, we found the location and hospitality at this interesting hotel excellent. We had the best meal of our holiday in the evening, sitting outside in the old cloister with first class food and a wonderful sunset view. We were a very brief walk from the cathedral. The parking was easy. We cannot recommend it more highly
