We stayed here as part of a great value for money Brittany Ferries package, which included return travel from Plymouth to St Malo, one night in a cabin on board and two nights bed and breakfast accommodation at Hotel l'Univers for just £99 per person. Arriving at around 8am, we were lucky that our room was already ready, meaning we could leave our luggage there for the day while we explored the St Malo's beautiful intra-muros. The hotel was ideally located, within easy walking distance of the entire city centre with its shops, restaurants and bars and only across the road from the Christmas market, which was taking place while we were there and the bus station, from which it is possible to catch buses around the surrounding area, notably to Mont Saint Michel. The hotel rooms were of a good standard, with comfortable beds and good en-suite shower rooms. The bedrooms also had TVs, with mostly French channels - it said on a notice that British channels could be watched, although we found this wasn't the case and the only English language channel was CNN. However, we don't tend to watch too much TV when we are away so this wasn't a problem. The breakfast at the hotel was excellent, offering a continental offering of breads, croissants, pain-au-chocolat, cheese, ham, yoghurt with fruit juice and coffee, plus lots more. The staff at the hotel were also very pleasant and welcoming. The only issue for us was that the hotel's bar seemed to be a popular spot for local smokers and the smell of cigarette smoke drifted up through the hotel corridors and into the room, albeit quite faint. All in all, we had a great stay in Saint Malo and if we spotted another great value trip we would be sure to return!

We went with Friends booking up through Brittany Ferries, 3 nights, one at the Hotel L'Univers - the cost £81 each, this included Breakfast at this Hotel - what a bargain. Therefore I can't feel I can complain about anything so I won't apart from the filthy stair carpet. I was dreading the bedroom but thankfully although it isn't the cleanest hotel I've ever stayed in it was certainly passable. The bed was comfortable and the sheets and towels were fresh and clean. Breakfast was plentiful, no one was around so we helped ourselves but this wasn't a problem.
St Malo was a very pleasant surprise, lots of places to eat - wear sensible shoes as there are cobbles everywhere. There is the most beautiful beach, som great shops very expensive though.
Well worth researching the bargains like we did. Worth every penny..

I stayed at the L'univers hotel in June as part of a 12 person golf society. We stayed 3 nights and I have to say I was pleasently surprised.
We parked in large parking area just around the corner from the hotel and walked into the main square which is where the hotel is located.
We were welcomed by the pleasent receptionist who dealt with us all quickly and efficiently, then we went our rooms which were of a good size with a good ensuite shower. our rooms were cleaned daily and left spotless.
The breakfast was a plentiful self service affair, with a good variety of fresh fruit, breads and pastries. The tables were kept clean by the staff but you were not hurried out.
The Hotel has a Bar with outside tables on the square were again the staff even though their english was limited were very friendly and even though it was open late, there is not a problem with noise.
St malo is a wonderful place and great to walk around, there are plenty of resturants to cater for all budgets. Also an abundant of Crepe and Waffle sellers to help your waistline.
A note for the golfers out there, Dinard golf club is right on the coast and even if you have a bad game, the views of the coastline are breath taking.
When i go back to St Malo i will definately stay at L'univers.

We have just spent a couple of nights at this hotel. Having arrived on the overnight ferry from Portsmouth at 8.15am we were not able to actually book into our room until 3pm in the afternoon which we thought a bit late. We were able to leave our luggage in the luggage room so were able to get out and explore.

The staff were all very friendly and our room was spacious, clean and comfortable.

Breakfast was good. There was plenty to choose from and it was kept well stocked.

Sat in a square just inside the town walls main gate this hotel was really easy to find and we were able to leave the car in the car park outside the walls and walk the short way to the hotel.

All in all a good basic, hotel in a perfect setting
