“Basic comfort”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 October 2009

The Hotel du Palais has all you need for a comfortable short stay, assuming you are not going to be spending a lot of time in the room.
The rooms are small, very clean
The lift is claustrophobically small but the stairs are perfectly accessible.
We were greeted most pleasantly by all the staff we encountered
The location is good.

Parking is a nightmare intramuros, but the hotel sells reasonably priced parking vouchers which allow you 24-hour access to the carparks just outside the walls. It is not far to walk.
Breakfast was good.
Internet was fast and easy to access (take your own laptop.)

“Conveniently located, reasonable priced hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 June 2009

We chose this hotel principally for its location within the 'intra muros' part of St Malo. From this perspective, the hotel was a good choice. Right in the centre of the walled city, within walking distance of the beach, city walls and cathedral..Plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars nearby. Although no hotel car park, we managed to find a spot outside the front entrance which is free in the early evening until about 9.15am.
The hotel was closed on our arrival - a notice displayed on the door stated a return by 7.00pm and giving a telephone number to ring. This worked fine, and we were given the code to the back door and told where our key was and where the room was located. This was all conducted in french so if you don't have the language you'll need to wait until 7.00pm when the front door was open.
We had a triple room on the top floor (described as the troisieme etage, but in reality the fourth floor). The final set of steps were very narrow and not for the unfit. The lift was quite small and could not fit two adults, a teenager plus overnight bags all in one go. Our room overlooked the roof tops of the walled city - very romantic until we heard the bells (from the nearby cathedral) and the seagulls who had taken up residency outside the window. This, together with the rather noisy lift, meant a fairly sleepless night had by all three of us. Our room, a triple, was small but clean and adequate. The en suite bathroom had a small size bath located under the eaves. This meant that it was not possible to stand up in the bath or use the shower in any way other than sitting or kneeling . It was also very small, so someone of 'traditional build' like my husband had difficulty fitting himself in it. That said, the bathroom was clean and we had plenty of good sized bath towels.
We wold recommend this hotel for a short stay as its location is excellent.

“Great location. Parking a nightmare.”

This hotel is in a great location in the old walled town. The rooms are clean and well serviced but small. You are only a minute or two from all the attractions of the town. We went out for breakfast each day and ate well in a selection of local restaurants. The big disadvantage of this hotel is its lack of parking. You can park outside of the walled town and walk to the hotel - 10/15 minutes - or you can try to find on street parking. In the Summer this can be very difficult and costs 2 euros an hour. The streets are also very narrow and our car was damaged while parked outside the hotel on our first night. Our repair bill will be more than the cost of our stay in St Malo! So this is a great place to stay in that you are at the centre of everything but a car is a disadvantage here.

“Location, location, location”

The Hotel du Palais is perfectly situated in St. Malo. It is maybe a 2 minute walk from the ramparts (on the ocean side), and about the same to the cathedral and center of activity, but still enough away that it was quiet at night. The rooms are very small, but clean as can be, and the breakfast was just right (fresh croissant, french bread, jam, yogurt, fruit compote, hot drink of your choice), and all this for a very reasonable price. If you need a bigger room, you'll probably have to look outside the walls of St. Malo; but if you're ok with a small place, this is a great spot. I'd definitely stay there again.

“Delightful place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 October 2004

We stayed at the Hôtel du Palais in September and had a lovely time. We arrived very early, exhausted from a ferry crossing, and they had a room for us that had been unused the night before, so we were able to get in right away. The day we left, we left our luggage in their lobby until ferry time, and roamed the city unburdened. They answered questions about the language, and were friendly and helpful in every way we could wish. Very upbeat and people-oriented.

And the town was such fun to explore. The hotel is inside the old walls (okay, rebuilt after WWII, but still...), and there are interesting wiggly streets, a church, the walls to walk along, the beach--and a place to eat about every eighteen inches (and the is good in all of them, it seems!) There's a bus to Mont Saint-Michel--buses to everywhere, in fact.

Room and linens clean, bed comfy, bathroom ensuite. Continental breakfast--coffee, croissants so good that butter was superfluous, and what I thougt was the best yogurt I had ever tasted, but turned out to be fromage frais. Cereal, too, if you wanted it.

If we went back, I'd want to settle right in there again.
