“This hotel is fine! Perfectly acceptable!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2010

After reading some reviews of this hotel, we were a little worried. However, we have been pleasantly surprised and perfectly satisfied. Upon arrival we received a very warm reception from the lady at the check-in desk and nothing was too much trouble. The hotel. is what it is . . . a three-star hotel and that is how it is advertised and marketed, so if you are expecting a five-star experience, stay somewhere else. For our two young children the room we had was perfect - very roomy with two large double beds and the bathroom was roomy with a great shower. The room was also very clean and very quiet - we all had a great night's sleep - no street noise at all. The breakfast spread was vast, everything from freshly cooked croissants, baguettes and an assortment of delicious pastries to cereals, toast, eggs, ham and cheeses. Yes, the lift is small, but this is St Malo a medieaval town built thousands of years ago . . . the Central is a charming French hotel. The hotel's best feature is its location - as the name suggests, very central, everything you could wish for is literally on the doorstep - restaurants, cafes, bars, shops, the city walls to walk along with its great views. We would stay there again - no problem.

“Great location but fails to take advantage!”

Firstly, we thought we were staying at a Best Western hotel as all the pre-booking photos clearly showed the BW signage and, indeed, it was featured on the BW website. When we arrived all signage references to Best Western had been masked over by white tape and, lo and behold, it had disappeared from the BW website. There were no tea/coffee making facilities or mini bar, both of which were featured in the advertisements and when we queried this we were told that, unfortunately, not all rooms had these amenities. Service was variable - sometimes quite good and other times non-existent. Staff members were unfailingly poite and, for the most part, helpful but there was no consistency; soap provided one day but not the next; rooms well cleaned one day almost ignored the next. Strange....

We did not risk the restaurant but sampled breakfast on the 4 days we were there. Nothing outstanding but bread and pastries were fresh and they provided good cold meats and cheese - no major criticisms although a little uninspiring. Finally, and a real plus, Hotel Central has a great location just inside the walled ramparts.

“It was fine.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 July 2010

We were foot passengers and this hotel is an easy walk away from the ferry terminal. We booked with Brittany Ferries and got a much better deal than if we had booked direct. After reading the reviews on the websites we were afraid we had made a big mistake but this hotel was fine. Staff were friendly, room clean and spacious and plenty of choice at breakfast time. The hotel was mostly quiet when we were there but a large party did check in for one night with no detrimental effect on the service. We had a room at the back and were not kept awake by any noise, although we did walk for miles so slept like logs! The location was great. We didn't eat in the hotel as we wanted to soak up the atmosphere of the old town and everything is on the doorstep. If I were to visit St Malo again I would not hesitate to stay here again.

“Dark,shabby but great location”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2009

We stayed here on the last night of our holiday. We had booked it using the Best Western handbook whilst on holiday. The reception had a dark and sombre air as did the male receptionist who checked us in. He gave me a list for a minibar which did not exist!! The lift is minsicule - 3 people would be a squeeze never mind luggage. The corridors had a peculiar smell and I wouldn't rate the carpets too highly. Our room was on the fifth floor and looked into a grim 'courtyard' type affair. It made me think of an old tenement building, reinforced when I was able to see residents in the next building making their breakfast! The room appeared reasonably clean but definately shabby. The bed had certainly seen better days. The bathroom however, was mildewed and dated. The toiletries had obviously been there a while and handled by a few people. The fan did not work at all. For a Best Western, we were disappointed. We did not have breakfast as the hotel did not inspire us to stay. Check out was marginally more pleasant. As for parking, we had intended to use the 15 euro a night car park belonging to the hotel but ended up using the public car park at the far end of the walls. It cost us just 3 euro but it is disconcerting to be so far away from your car especially when we came upon 2 cars within the walls which had windows smashed. Howver, Saint Malo is a beautiful old town and pushed for space.
