“Hotel Central, St Malo”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 September 2011

The hotel is in a good location, in the walled town, close to the cathedral, shops and restaurants. The staff were all friendly, helpful and courteous. On our last day there was a delay with our order for tea to our room and the receptionist was very apologetic and said it would be free of charge.
The hotel restaurant had excellent food and service. The food was well cooked and beautifully presented and the waiters very helpful and friendly. An English version of the menu would be helpful.
The breakfast was adequate but nothing to look forward to - even the coffee was disappointing.
We felt the decor of the hotel let it down. There was a great deal of dark blue and the whole impression was somewhat oppressive, although the room was a fair size and very clean. The restaurant and breakfast area could have done with a fresh lick of paint and the whole of the decor was rather tired. This was unfortunate because it lets down the overall impression of the hotel.

“More than adequate & a great restaurant!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2011

It is a 3 star hotel and that's how it is advertised. It may need a little bit of redecoration but it is comfortable and clean and has an excellent location. The lift is no worse than one will experience anywhere else in France. We had large travel packs so it simply meant one person and their pack at a time. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The breakfast selection was an excellent "Continental" one - light layered melt in your mouth croissants, cereals, yoghurt, breads, various 'cakes', ham, cheeses, excellent coffee ... The attached restaurant is excellent! A wonderful fine dining experience with first class service. We wouldn't hesitate to stay there again should we ever be lucky enough to return to St Malo.

“Great location close to one of the Saint-Malo town gates”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 June 2011

I arrived in Saint-Malo one evening looking for a hotel. After parking outside the walls and entering the gate pulling my suitcase along, the first few I came to were "complet," but this one had a few rooms left. The young man at the front desk was extremely nice and spoke some English. The room was an older hotel room, very adequate and fairly comfortable, with a double bed and a large bathroom. It could stand to be updated in terms of decor, but it was fine for my needs, though perhaps a bit overpriced (it was around 100 euros per night). I was on 2nd floor with a window looking out onto the cobblestone street. It has a small elevator. Be aware that this is a quiet town at night--everything seemed to shut down early on a weeknight. Internet access available but I had trouble with the weak connection.

“This hotel is fine! Perfectly acceptable!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2010

After reading some reviews of this hotel, we were a little worried. However, we have been pleasantly surprised and perfectly satisfied. Upon arrival we received a very warm reception from the lady at the check-in desk and nothing was too much trouble. The hotel. is what it is . . . a three-star hotel and that is how it is advertised and marketed, so if you are expecting a five-star experience, stay somewhere else. For our two young children the room we had was perfect - very roomy with two large double beds and the bathroom was roomy with a great shower. The room was also very clean and very quiet - we all had a great night's sleep - no street noise at all. The breakfast spread was vast, everything from freshly cooked croissants, baguettes and an assortment of delicious pastries to cereals, toast, eggs, ham and cheeses. Yes, the lift is small, but this is St Malo a medieaval town built thousands of years ago . . . the Central is a charming French hotel. The hotel's best feature is its location - as the name suggests, very central, everything you could wish for is literally on the doorstep - restaurants, cafes, bars, shops, the city walls to walk along with its great views. We would stay there again - no problem.

“Great location but fails to take advantage!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 September 2010

Firstly, we thought we were staying at a Best Western hotel as all the pre-booking photos clearly showed the BW signage and, indeed, it was featured on the BW website. When we arrived all signage references to Best Western had been masked over by white tape and, lo and behold, it had disappeared from the BW website. There were no tea/coffee making facilities or mini bar, both of which were featured in the advertisements and when we queried this we were told that, unfortunately, not all rooms had these amenities. Service was variable - sometimes quite good and other times non-existent. Staff members were unfailingly poite and, for the most part, helpful but there was no consistency; soap provided one day but not the next; rooms well cleaned one day almost ignored the next. Strange....

We did not risk the restaurant but sampled breakfast on the 4 days we were there. Nothing outstanding but bread and pastries were fresh and they provided good cold meats and cheese - no major criticisms although a little uninspiring. Finally, and a real plus, Hotel Central has a great location just inside the walled ramparts.
