First impressions count. This is a fairy tale castle set in a tranquil and rural location.
We were welcomed warmly by the hotel porter and receptionist with the extra bonus of being told that we had been upgraded to a de luxe room, being Relais et Châteaux Club 5C members.
Inspection of the room, set in one of the turrets, revealed what can only be one of the most bizarre rooms we have ever visited. Gold everywhere including not just the taps but also the bath, bidet and toilet! When mentioning this rather 'bling' environment to the owner, he explained that his wife was Spanish!
Being a warm day, we decided that a swim before dinner was in order. The swimming pool, set in the grounds very close to the Château, was a good size but more than a bit run down. Avoiding the tripping hazards created by the uneven and tilting terrace around the pool, we enjoyed our swim in the clean and well maintained pool. The adjacent pavilion, furnished in Moroccan style, was exceptional and, in the high season, would provide an excellent escape from the sun. Shame it was unattended as it would have been good to have enjoyed an aperitif before getting ready for dinner.
Dinner was not the best - not helped by the fact that the kitchens are at the opposite end of the Château. The fillet of sole was served skin on which is unacceptable in a Michelin starred restaurant and one would be advised to bring a metal detector to the table. Why - because the wild duck really was wild, the lead shot still being in the bird. A comment met with the usual Gallic shrug! Desserts were exceptional. Service was however only adequate.
In summary, a hotel that will not be to everyone's taste but worth a visit - if only to wonder at the metallic gold coloured sanitary-ware.
