Had such high hopes for this place. It was reputed to be "the" hotel in the area during the mid 90s when I was a sudent washing dishes in a local auberge, so returning to stay as a guest I was laden with expectation. Sure, the place looks like it was last refurbed in Mitterand's first term of office, but it is clean and well-serviced, so this should perhaps be overlooked. The restaurant staff are helpful and friendly and the food (breakfast and dinner) is adequate and of reasonable quality. However, any goodwill is worn away by the terrible state of the rooms (I've overnighted in Campaniles/Kyriads and these have been better, for a third of the price...) and a management style that is haughty, officious and suspicious - behaviour so shocking as to verge on parody. Monty Python's "French Taunter" leapt to mind during one exchange.
Given the regular, daily comings and goings of the tour buses outside and the volume of folks of a certain age occupying the restaurant en masse, perhaps the hotel no longer needs to prioritise customer service. Perhaps it makes enough just by churning through the tour buses and maximising volume. If so then it is sad, because this place could be so much more. Fortunately for discriminating guests, the rest of the town does seem to have moved with the times and since I was last there another hotel has opened and looks like a great place. Whether or not the Relais du Soleil d'Or now ups its game is anyone's guess.
