“Terrible”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2012

Terrible food comes from a catering company and merely re-heated, the so called famous magret de canard with its 3 fumets (sauces) are bought in sachets, the head waitress is class less to the point of vulgar and the waiting staff arent much better. If you want good food in the dordogne go to La Mule Blanche at La Bachallerie, i have eaten in michelin starred restaurants that arent as good as La Mule Blanche

“Didn't Love it - will not be back”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 August 2011

This is a rundown over-rated poorly maintained hotel. And i believe management are dishonest in the way they charge for rooms. We were supposedly in a superior room - i would hate to see their basic ones!!. Like other reviewers, they insisted on charging us for a superior room despite our protestations. If you must stay here i would be clarifying which rooms and features make a superior room before i booked. The carpet ? was threadbare, the furnishings old, worn, from the sixties, the bath had no enamel left and the bathroom had not been renovated for 20 yrs at least! - nothing like the glass screened bathroom they show on their website. In the old building i peeked into most rooms and they were all the same tired furnishings - only one had the glass screened bathroom depicted online. We most certainly did not have airconditioning. Dont stay here. Try Le Chateau in St Bezies or anywhere else. They do not deserve the custom nor do they seem to care!

Room Tip: Ask to see a superior and a basic so that they cant cheat you.

“What a let-down!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 August 2011

I booked this hotel for a 2 night stopover on our way up through France so that we could explore this beautiful part of the country and stay in a little bit of luxury. How mistaken I was! The hotel looked lovely from the outside as it does in all the publicity shots, and was ideally situated in the middle on Montignac, however, when we were shown to our room my jaw dropped. Firstly, we had been designated a disabled person's room which, is all well and good except for the fact that neither my wife nor I are disabled, neither did we request such facilities! Even if we had, I would have been none-the-less disappointed as the room was very basic; a kin to a roadside motel, and not the 'superior room' I had booked. There were holes in the floor and walls where radiators once were, and shoddy patch-up jobs over other parts of the wall and the wall paper in places had started to peal off. The shower room, unlike the luxurious room in the brochure, was literally a hole in the floor and a shower too low to get under. Therefore I had to literally bend over backwards to get my head under the shower! I thought that there had been some misunderstanding and went to reception to air my disappointment, saying that there had obviously been some mix up as I had booked a superior room, only to be told that this was what was classed as a 'superior room' and there were no other vacant rooms in the hotel. If that was superior, I'd hate to see basic (see the pictures for yourself). To add insult to injury the room was so close to the kitchens, that if sleep was desired after 7 am, ear-plugs were a necessity.
As for the rest of the hotel well, the restaurant didn’t look too shabby, but there was no way that I was putting more money in their coffers so we ate out for breakfast and dinner. The pool looked lovely, however on closer inspection; several rusty hairgrips on the bottom didn’t inspire confidence in the levels of cleanliness!
My final attempt at rectifying the situation came when paying the bill, as I thought that surely there should be some recompense made towards us. However, I was tersely informed that the management were abroad and that she couldn't do anything about it. If I had paid £40 for the room per night as is expected at a roadside motel that would have been fair enough, however, the bill topped £200 for 2 nights, room only!!! OUTRAGEOUS!!!

“Should have listened to the reviews on Tripadvisor”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 July 2011

We stayed here for 2 nights based on a guidebook recommendation. The rooms were small, but comfortable. However, on the second day there was a private party during the day. Although the party was over ~5 PM, the waitstaff was noisy and partying into the night making it impossible to sleep. There are other places that can provide more value and comfort for the $.

“Charming old in-town inn; elegant pool surrounded by gardens and restaurant.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 May 2011

The Relais du Soleil d'Or was a wonderful discovery, set in the heart of the small town of Montignac. What made it wonderful? Understated historic charm and elegance.

We were lucky to have a corner room on the second floor, facing the pool and gardens at the back of the hotel. This room benefitted from a double-exposure on the corner, each with large windows we threw open to let the country air drift through our room. A small clean bathroom in the room, as well as a tv and comfortable bed.

The restaurant looked like a wonderful choice, set overlooking the pool. We didn't enjoy the restaurant, however we did enjoy several hours on lounge chairs around the pool, reading in the sun and playing boules in the nearby gardens with a bottle of white hand at hand. Idyllic.

A "plus" is that you're in the very small town center, so an easy walk to other nice restaurants along the riverbanks, as well as cafes, bars and a small cinema.

Room Tip: Corner room facing pool from second floor.
