If you ever nurtured a dream to restore an old wreck of a monastic farm in rural France, save yourself the labor and visit the Ferme de Tayac! It is everyone's dream come true. We were there for 4 nights last year and just returned from 8 more! In so many ways, the Ferme evokes medieval life in rural France, from the buildings' construction of completely idiosyncratic timber framing (you can see the carpenters' marks on each member), to the hand-hewn stones that form walls and steps. To this ancient fabric Suzanne and Mike have added modern bathrooms, good lighting and wonderful beds, and filled the grounds with ever-blooming roses, lavender borders, boxwood, and old-fashioned flowering plants. Others have noted the convenience of this location (for example, in 8 days we visited 5 chateaux/gardens, 4 caves, 2 rock shelters, 7 picturesque villages - 3 with markets - and 2 world-class museums). But the very best part of a sojourn at the Ferme is that Mike and Suzanne have created ways for guests to meet, tell stories around an enormous breakfast table, and share picnic lunches or dinners or glasses of wine under the shelter of the "abri" in the garden. On chilly days the wood fire in the large and graciously furnished salon draws guests round. Time seems to almost stand still, the only reminders of the day being the 8:00 am and 7:00 pm church bells, three beautiful tones that make every cell in your body smile . Bring along a Swiss army knife, some plasticware and a willingness to let the day unfold as it will, and remember how much fun it is to make an occasion out of very simple ingredients. The Ferme de Tayac is our idea of Heaven.
Room Tip: Room #5, at the back, has French doors that let onto the very private back garden with a metal table...
