I stayed in a junior suite at Les Glycines for two days while attending the wedding of a dear friend held at a nearby estate. The wedding was wonderful. The hotel - truly awful. Why? The room was O.K., if overpriced (235 euros) and inaccurately described as a suite (meaning a separate bedroom) when in fact it was just a large room. The meals were also overpriced - an espresso was 4.5 euros (!), a price you might expect to pay at a Michelin starred restaurant in Paris, but hardly at a hotel restaurant in the middle of the countryside...But none of this would have mattered enough to cause me to write this review. I'm writing because of the way I was treated literally in the last few minutes prior to checkout on a Sunday morning. I had assumed that check-out was at 12:00 P.M. and was making a last minute phone call in the room at about 12:30 when the manager stormed in and started screaming at me to pack my bags and get out. I'm not exaggerating - he was actually screaming. My crime, as it turned out, was that check-out was actually 11:00 A.M...So I
concluded my phone call and was at the front desk by 12:45 P.M to check out - and there he was actually standing over me with arms folded making sure that I left immediately! I was amused to see that one of the reviews of this hotel describes the male staff as acting like a bunch of Russian prisoners. I disagree. Your average Russian prisoner might be a bit surly, I suppose, but this fellow was nasty, pompous, threatening, and overbearing - more like a Gestapo officer than a Russian prisoner...There are plenty of nice inns and hotels in the area - if you value courteous service, don't stay here. By the way, unlike many people, I get along just fine with the French - my Dad's family immigrated to the U.S. from France, I speak the language fairly well, I've lived several years of my life in Paris, my grandfather even served as ambassador to France in the thirties - but my experience at this hotel was a reminder of why so many people return from a trip to France detesting the French. It's such a shame.
