“Rude staff”

When we arrived at the hotel, we were very pleased with the location, which is very close to the beach and the main shops and bars. However when we rang the front doorbell, we were greeted by a very abrupt man who made us wait on the front step for several minutes while he was too busy to let us in through the front door. We were told that (at 2:30pm) our hotel room was not ready and we were sent away for an hour. When we came back, there was nobody at reception and our bags were still left by the side of the reception desk for anybody to take. The hotel room was big, however the shutters for the window were on their last legs and the curtain did not go all the way across the window. The room looked tatty and the toilet did not flush properly in the bathroom. When we were leaving the hotel to head in to town, we asked the man at the reception desk if it would be possible for him to phone us a taxi to the airport in the morning. He refused to do this, was very rude and obnoxious and after dismissing my partner, he promptly ignored us to carry on with his ‘jobs’. We did not have a particularly good night’s sleep as the walls were paper thin and we could hear people moving around the hotel and since the hotel is near to the main street in Biarritz, we heard partygoers pass at all hours of the night. It spoiled our last night in Biarritz and I definitely would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

“Almost like staying in a bed and breakfast”

We loved the Maison du lierre. It is idealy located and provided a friendly and comfortable place to stay but don't expect luxury or full service. I would definitely stay again if we go back to Biarritz.

Stayed at the Maison du Lierre for 2 nights with my wife and 2 year old son. Our room was very comfortable and clean. We had a small balcony that overlooked the street and the park that is diagonal to the hotel. The hotel is furnished as if it was a house (it doesn't have that many rooms anyway) which provided a friendly atmosphere. We bathroom was small but usable.

This is not a full service hotel. There is single person that takes care of the reception and the breakfast room. She was very friendly and spoke good Spanish. Unfortunately the reception is only open until early evening. They will make special arrangements if you arrive late but don't expect a wake up call early in the morning or someone to help you with the luggage late at night.

Although the hotel was sold out during our stay we did not have any issues with excessive noise.

“Friendly Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 October 2007

We booked this at the very last minute and so did not have a lot of choice for accommodation in the town. We were pleasantly surprised by the hotel. It is conveniently located for the airport, train station, beaches, reastaurants and the town centre.

We received a very friendly welcome and the room was well sized with a newish, if small bathroom suite. The wooden floors were a bit noisy, but they fitted well with the more traditional furnishings in the room, which was nicely decorated in line with the room name (camomille, room 14 on the first floor).

Breakfast was a bit pricey, but the boulangerie across the road from the bottom of the Rue du Jardin Public was good value, offering freshly baked breads, a coffee machine and a couple of tables just outside the door.

“Depends on your room”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 August 2007

We were desperate for last minute accomodation in Biarritz in August and booked this before reading the slamming reviews on TripAdvisor!
The hotel is well situated in the centre of town and near to bus stops to the airport. Our first room was actually modern, fresh and clean and the staff were really friendly. However, the breakfast's overpriced at 10 euros for bread, yoghurt, juice and a hot drink. Especially when you can get breakfast for 6 euros in town.
We were so happily surprised that we booked the hotel on our way home, a week later. This time we were given a bigger, and therefore more expensive room on the ground floor. There was a sign explaining that the hotel was undergoing refurbishment, which explained the massive difference in quality (but not price). The bathroom smelt damp, probably due to the cork (?!) walls, and contained a variety of insect life. The beds were covered with a quilt and cushions which had not seen a washing machine in a very long time, although the proper bedding (pillows are found in the wardrobe) was clean. Finally, being right next to reception, our sleep was governed by how much noise the owners made in reception.
I'm sure Maison du Lierre will get there in the end with its refurbishments, but in the meantime, ask to see your room before agreeing to take it and don't bother with breakfast.

“Gorgeous two star hotel !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 August 2007

Just back from a five day stay in the Maison du Lierre & having read the reviews we were really concerned about the hotel. However we were pleasantly suprised - our room (number 17) was spacious, similar in style to the photographs on the hotel website, & we had a very large terrace with table & chairs. We has specified that we wanted a renovated room - so perhaps this could explain the difference ? Certainly I'd class this as a lovely three star hotel.

We'd certainly recommend this hotel & while the room wasn't cheap at €130 per night - a last minute hotel booking in high season Biarritz is never going to be cheap.

  • Liked — Beautiful shabby chic decor
  • Disliked — Wooden stairs can be quite noisy
