I am taking this opportunity to advise all would be "budget travellers" to Biarritz of the Palm Hotel in the old port area of this beautiful seaside town. The town itself is enchanting and exudes an aura of chic glitz (casino, 5* hotels, Napoleonic Palaces, breathtaking mansions, fantastic beaches) yet can be enjoyed without it having to cost an arm and a leg.
I have stayed at the Palym Hotel on several occassions and recommend it wholeheartedly. The rooms are suprisingly large by french standards and while quite basic are spotless and comfortable. Those of you intending to go to Biarritz for the surfing will be pleased to hear that triple rooms are available at very reasonable rates which leaves more money for apres-surf!!!
There is also a fantastic restaurant, The Palmarium, attached to the hotel which offers everything from pizzas to fillet steaks at prices that wont give you indegestion. This restaurant is also very popular with the locals which speaks volumes for the quality and value.
The owner, Bernard Lacoune, is a real gem, nothing is too much trouble for him and he is always on hand to answer queries, sort problems, give advice or just be good company over a glass of wine. A lovely man and a real ambassador for Biarritz.
If you are in this part of France it would be a shame to miss Biarritz and thanks to the Palym Hotel your visit could work out less expensive than you thought. The hotel can cater for single travellers to school parties and everyone is made to feel welcome.
Bernard is always willing to negotiate special rates for larger parties and the hotel is open all year. ---
