“Previous Reviews too harsh”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2009

We did not stay in this hotel by choice- we were booked into it by contacts in France. Having read the reviews, we were dreading staying there. However, previous reviewers seem to have unreal expectations of a two star hotel. We found the Maison du Lierre to be basic, but clean and friendly. Breakfast was adequate and the location was excellent. Not for the unfit - we had to lug our suitcase up several flights of stairs. Not for those who really like their comfort, but certainly not as bad as painted!

“Sad experience”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 August 2009

I'm not the kind of person who complains easily about anything, but I had a terrible experience in this hotel.
The day that I arrived i checked in the hotel at 13.30 I got the key of my room and when I got in the room, that wasn't clean. The sheets of the person who slept the night before were still there. I thought (this things happen) When I explained in reception the situation they decided to prioritize the cleaning of my room. When I was about to leave the hotel, to have a walk while they were cleaning, the room service guy came to me and started to ask me who I thought I was to give him the priorities of his job.
The check in time in that hotel is 16.00 but I was never aware of that. I got an email confirmation where they asked my what was the expected hour of my arrival, but it didn't mention the checking time. Following this incident: my room wasn't clean in the following day. The lights in the toilet didn't work, and even if I asked them to fix them, they only fixed the night before I was leaving.
The day of my departure the same room service guy came at 11.00 and asked me to leave my room and he said I had 10 min to do so.
As a reward of all those incidents I got a free breakfast what was a good gesture. But honestly someone should teach the staff of that hotel lots about customer service.

“Good location, but rooms below average”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 July 2007

The location of the hotel is great, but the accomodation is not what it is to be believed based on the web site. The rooms are very basic with a bed that is not made for tall people, the bathroom is very small and we had a broken shower head. The promised garden view is hardly there, only in the distance (15 meters) you see a little piece of the concrete garden. Breakfast was good although it didn't contain anything savory (ham/cheese) only marmelade. If the price was 20 euro lower, you would have good value for money but at 81 euro excl. breakfast it is just average. The location makes up for a lot.

“Grim little hole”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2006

It must be said that Maison du Lierre's website is very deceptive. We decided to book a week at "maison" on the strength of the images shown on the site. At €80 for a double room per night, we did not expect the Ritz but the rooms looked basic but fresh and clean. We were most dissappointed when we arrived. The door was locked and we had to call a number pinned on the front door to alert a receptionist. The foyer of the hotel looked ok, simply decorated, a bit rustic but the room was a vast dissappointment. It was absolutely teeny weeny. How they crammed a double bed into it was unfathomable. One had to shuffle around the bed in a sideways fashion to access the toilet or balcony. The room stank of toilet. The toilet stank of damp. The towels stank of other people. There were fleas on the shower curtain. The balcony overlooked brick walls and backyards. The "wardrobe" was a blanket pinned to a wall and the walls were so thin that we heard every possible detail of an adjacent amorous tryst. We decided the following morning to seek out another hotel immediately and we booked into the excellent Hotel Normandie. My husband politely offered to pay for 2 nights to cover the inconvenience of our departure at short notice but the lady he dealt with was most unpleasant about the whole issue and insisted that we pay for 3 nights. To summarise, this hotel is very poor value and far from clean.
