To start, Citea Bordeaux is in a marginal and drab residential neighborhood close to nowhere interesting -- travelers seem out of place. A patina of cheapness colors the hotel, and the numerous security features (codes to key in, card swipes to enter steel gates) give the place a prison quality. Ironically, the hotel name and room number on your key guarantee that if you lose it, your room will be cleaned out in no time!
Beds were minimally comfortable, the carpets stained, the wall paint scuffed, the bathroom dorm-like, the furniture flimsy. The place does not have air conditioning, so during Bordeaux's recent heat wave my son and I cooked in our top floor room... as I'm sure, so did the pricey bottle of Medoc wine I bought (which isn't imported to the USA, except now -- as vinegar!). As the windows lacked screens, opening them for a breeze simply brought in the flies and other bugs.
Parking is available in bottom level of the cavernous spiraling garage under the hotel, for an additional 7 euros a day. The garage was largely empty the six days we were there -- why not just give free parking as a benefit to guests? Room phone usage is available only by allowing the reception to debit your credit card for 15 euros -- even if one has a pre-paid calling card! While soap is provided in the bathroom, the kitchenette has none for washing dishes, the responsibility of guests.
One last thing: payment for your entire stay at Citea Bordeaux is required in full upon arrival... never a good idea for the customer. As the hotel is a chain throughout France, I surmise the other establishments are equally undesirable. Avoid the Citea!
