“friendly and helpful if quite basic”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2010

we arrived here and were met by the receptionist who was quirky and funny. he immediately put us at ease and made us laugh. we were checked in and i practiced my french a little. we then got excellent advice from the receptionist who drew on a map where to go etc. our room was basic, but in line with what i had expected for the price. the bathroom was basically a giant soda can with a shower and toilet which was funny. but the place was fairly clean and the bed was comfortable. i think we got lucky too as the room had an adjoining living room style area also so we had loads of space.
the walls and floors are thin and we could hear certain goings on in the room above us but so what?!
for the price and considering its decent location, i would definitely recommend this place to budget travellers. i also reallt liked bordeaux aside from a terrible dining experience at "Chez Maman" (read my review).

“ONE OF THE WORST EVER - DO NOT STAY HERE”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2010

Well when we arrived here I thought oh my god, its like staying in a place that has never been fixed and back in the 60's. It was old, terrible carpet and very smelly and very run down.

Two sleepless nights here as the walls are paper thin (it also says that in Lonely planet guide). So noisy at night so had very restless nights with as it always sounded like someone was coming in our door so I didn't feel safe at all. Every noise possible you could hear even people going to the toilet. Also I got BEDBUGS, I scratched and scratched two nights so NO don't stay here its a dump just to put it nicely because you can't swear here. When I left, no more bites, funny that!

Bordeaux - nice city but very dodgy around cathedral and glad to leave this city for several reasons.

“***Do Not Stay Here***”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 September 2009

An important note for anyone who is considering staying at Hostel Studio… If you are arriving in the evening, make sure you let them know the exact time you will be arriving, and if you are going to be even 5 minutes late, I'd advise you to phone them.

We were coming from Paris, and I had stated that our group of four would be arriving at 20:00. We actually didn't arrive in Bordeaux until 20:20. I had tried to call at 20:30 to let them know that we were on our way, but there was no answer. By the time we got to the hostel, it was 20:45 with all doors locked, no lights on and no one answering their phone. On all documents and advertisements, it states that reception closes at 21:00. After waiting around for about half hour no one arrived and we ended up having to pay for another room at a slightly more expensive hotel up the road called Hotel Touring (which I would highly recommend – great location, polite and extremely helpful staff; and the rooms were spacious and clean and our group would definitely recommend paying the extra 10 EURO per night for a their rooms - Brilliant).

The next day we were at the front door (with another couple who had the same thing happened to them) from 07:55 onwards as the reception was supposed to be open at 08:00. We waited around until 08:45 as we had to leave at that time for a tour. No one answered the phone or the door again.

We went back later that evening around 19:00 to find the "receptionist" who after we started explaining the situation, told us that we were lying and that we'd arrived at midnight and not before 21:00. He told that it was impossible that we returned there until at 08:45 that morning because he'd served breakfast at 08:15. He also informed us that as we didn’t arrive at our specified time of 20:00, he'd left early to check on the other locations of the hostel which were around the corner – there were no signs stating this on the door with any other contact details, nor was the office line on divert.

He refused to take off the deposit already paid through hostelworld, and then after quite a bit of discussion told us that "If only he had enough words in english to tell us what he really thought of us" which we all thought was extremely rude and disgraceful. He certainly isn't an asset to the hostel and if I were the owner I'd rethink my staff. Out of all the hostels I have stayed in over my several years of travelling, I have NEVER encountered a hostel with such rude and unhelpful staff nor one that closes well before the time stated on the sign out the front.

When we finally got access to our rooms, they were not even in the building listed on the website but a good 250 meters down the road with no lift, and the rooms were extremely basic (bring your own towel as they supply you with a hand towel for your shower). If we hadn't already paid money towards the accommodation, we would have returned to Hotel Touring.

“Too basic..”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 June 2009

According my opinion, this hotel (in fact, Excelsidor hotel, its sister hotel, just two buildings beside) is just little bit too basic for me... But, I know I paid 33 euros (2 people) for the night and we get a room with this value. Bring a sleeping bag or a liner, sheets are so old et worn. Room very smelly. Cute balcony and windows. Staff was ok. Very good location ! :)

“Decent location, but not worth it”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 June 2006

My friends and I arrived in Bordeaux and took a bus to the main area (Place Gambetta). However, after we got off the bus, we had to drag our suitcases for about 10 minutes down Cours Clemenceau to the hostel, only to be told by the receptionist that we had to walk back those 10 minutes to another hostel to be checked in (I'm guessing it was a sister hostel). After we walked back and checked in, we had to drag our suitcases AGAIN another few blocks to where our room really was. The location was good, but all of this walking back and forth to go to our room could have been avoided if only they had notified us earlier that we had to go to a different hostel in the first place. When we saw our room, our first reaction was a mix of disgust and disappointment. The room was mildewy, and not very well ventilated...so we left our window open, which then led to flies and mosquitoes coming into the room (there were no window screens). The bathroom looks dingy, but the water pressure was fine (the only good thing about the room). Good thing we only stayed one night. I wondered why the only pictures they provided of the place were paintings of snowcapped mountains (there are none in Bordeaux). This place is only recommended if you're an extremely budgeted traveler.
