Well I am sitting in the reception area of this "hotel" having arrived here about 40 minutes ago. Where do I start?
Having pre-warned the hotel that I was going to be arriving late, I expected them not to have exhibited such surprise when I did actually make an appearance. After much pontification, they asked, delete that .. demanded my passport (for reasons unknown to me and also, it seems to them!) and then before I had the opportunity to take off my rucksack in order to gain access to my wallet, they demanded payment. The entire checking in experience was somewhat degrading and very far from what I had expected.
I decided that since it was nearly midnight, I would simply avail myself of the room awaiting me and create some distance between myself and the hotel staff, who by this stage, I really could not stomach. I had arrived at the hotel cheerful, yet by the time I got to my room, I simply wanted to sleep in readiness to leave early the next morning.
I am given a key to a room on the second floor and make my way wearily along the dimly lit hallway reminiscent of a halfway house. I get to the room, turn the key and what awaits me? Well.. to start with a profound smell of cheesy feet and socks and then the manifestation of what appeared to be someone else's socks, shoes and trousers on the floor. They had given me someone else's bedroom.
I make my way back down to the reception and they apologise profusely (Well I shall not give them a demerit for that) and give me another key.
By this stage, I am slightly more anxious than before fearing that the state of the first room was probably a good indication of the appearance of the one to follow. I was for the most part correct. Ok, the room was tidy, it had a tv and the beds were made up, but that really was about all I can say that was positive.
If you dislike sailing and ships, then you will dislike the layout of the bedroom which is reminiscent of a cabin (albeit a cabin in a hostel for the homeless). Small, claustrophobic with a bizarre portacabin type shower room (see photos).
Moreover the curtain was falling off of the rail and the carpet had seen better days. I am presently in the reception area writing this review and only hope that when I finally retire to bed, I do not suffocate in my sleep as the room is positively stifling.
Onto a few other points before I take the next few steps in the abyss which is that hotel room:
Firstly, the hotel is NOT 100 metres from the station. The distance is more akin to 200-300 metres.
Secondly, contrary to the impression provided by the hotel, it does not have internet access throughout the hotel, merely in the small seating area downstairs near the reception. You can attempt until kingdom come to obtain a wireless connection in the rooms, it will not happen. Perhaps, a little more honesty on their part would not have gone amiss. I did not relish having to sit downstairs in a public area with no privacy and I disliked the fact that on various websites that misrepresent the fact that there is no internet in any of the rooms.
Thirdly, I did not feel comfortable with them photocopying my passport given that the hotel was barely passable as a two star. What an earth did they think that any potential visitor could do to make the bedroom any more unbearable than it already was. A hotel guest could take that room apart and I am sure it would be a marked improvement.
Finally, the hotel is based down a side street which really is a little sinister when you are walking down there along at night. There were a lot of men wandering aimlessly outside and as a woman, I did not feel especially safe.
The one and possibly only positive factor was that the hotel was directly opposite the tram line which is precisely what I needed in the morning given that I am making my way back to the airport.
Would I stay at this hotel again? Resolutely no - for the 55 odd euros paid, it simply was not worth it and even if the standard of the hotel was higher, the attitude of two of the members of staff was a compelling enough reason not to return here again!
