“Not usable with a car”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

The "hotel parking" is actually in a public garage down the block. There are approximately 60 stairs you have to carry your luggage/stroller/etc. up and down to get from the parking garage to the hotel reception. No elevator and no luggage ramps. Not enough room in front of the hotel to park briefly and drop luggage -- it's only one space and usually full. The hotel is on a major road so double parking briefly is not possible.

Additionally, the signage from the parking garage to the hotel is misleading at best and generally missing (why doesn't Novotel fix that?), so it's hard to find the hotel if you park where the garage advises "Novotel" parking. I climbed three or four extra flights trying to find the entrance when I first arrived -- carrying 50 lbs of luggage. When I asked reception if there is a better route, I got only a bored shrug and assurance that the stairs are the only way. Extraordinarily difficult to stay here if you have a car.

Only advantage is that it's near a tram stop if you're heading into downtown Bordeaux. But the hotel's website indication that the hotel has parking is highly misleading. If the hotel had not been prepaid, I would have cancelled the reservation and gone elsewhere.

“Great stay at Bordeaux”

Nice hotel, with basic facilities and very close to dowtown. I had a really very nice experience! Even though the bed was somewhat curious in size, the room was wide enough, with and excellent bathroom and the restaurant was indeed great.

“don't stay here!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 November 2011

i checked in at 1pm - first point of note that parking is about 50m from the hotel where you enter an underground car park. Fine if you don't have children and a buggy or two.
To enter the hotel you must go up the stairs in the car park , three flights if your parked on the 1st floor - then down 2 flights to get to the hotel.

On arrival check in was smooth - although the person doing the check in did not smile or even say hello. Instead they sat socialising in the staff room behind the desk. The attitude seemed to be ' oh we have customers - we better do some work.' The hotel did not appear busy.

We stayed in room 707 - i had booked the Novotel Bordeaux as the website said a room with one double bed and two sofa beds. Fair enough you may say - however the two sofa beds were actually one sofa with two mattresses ( 2x slim single which fold out. Very slim and around 70% of the width of a normal single. The blue sheets on one of the bed was akin to the type of quality the royal air force would use when fishing someone out of the north sea during a rescue, dated and with no disrespect to the Royal Air Force it had stains on it. Clearly it had not been washed since the last unfortunate incumbent had resided there. The double bed made pogo noises when seated on and appeared to be a temporary double bed that could be lifted. It was not stable and made noise as and when you moved.

I ordered room service , requesting a soup, I was made to hold whilst the receptionist advised me a soup could not be prepared. I advised this was not satisfactory - referring her to the feeble room service menu and also the complaint mission statement left on my bed signed by some chap of authority stating ' if your not satisfied' we will refund your stay. Eventually she and the porter arrived with a soup in its original packaged plastic pot to the room.

Safe to say I checked out at 8pm and drove home - I could have asked for the sheets to be changed but thought it would be less hassle to drive back to Pau and return home.

A very poor experience and I shall not be staying with Novotel again.

“great pit stop!”

just staying in bordoux due to a late night landing. friendly staff, extra pillows, free wifi. a bit of a walk from place du Gambas, but managable. (not in heels.). the beds were very comfortable and i felt refreshed and ready to go in the morning.

The only thing i would say is that i could not open the window, but such is the way in modern hotels.

“Great location,”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 September 2011

Very convenient for the centre of Bordeaux - Cathedral just round the corner, as is the tram stop. The hotel was very good value for a family, although the rooms were more basic than the more modern Novotels (a chain which we use regularly for business and pleaseure) and the decor a bit tired. Staff were very helpful and friendly.
Parking is nearby but extra, and quite expensive.
Currently has building works right next to the hotel - no problem with noise or dust at the weekends - not sure during the week.
