“Stay anywhere but here.”

I attended a conference at Ciarus for 6 days and stayed there as well. Some of the attendees chose to rent an apartment and walk to Ciarus each day and that's what I would do if I could change the past. The accommodation is basic, that's not the complaint - you expect that. But the staff, with 1 or 2 (male) exceptions were unfailingly rude, offhand and unhelpful. Before I went I emailed them that I am vegetarian and that I had been a bit concerned about the reviews I'd read about noisy school parties. No problem, they wrote back, we cater to vegetarians and the school kids are not going to be an issue. Well, each day for the whole 6 days I had to go out for all my meals as not one vegetarian dish was offered and the breakfast each day was the same dreary croissant, bread and jam.. And the French and German schoolkids rampaging up and down the halls till the wee small hours (not a teacher in sight), yelling and slamming doors, nearly sent me round the twist. When some of us spoke to the staff they literally shrugged their shoulders in classic Gallic indifference. If you want to save money in Strasbourg, there are plenty of hotels and apartments, but book ahead as they are often booked out. If that had not been the case I would have moved to another place but I could not find a room. A thousand yuks to Ciarus.

“Ok for the money.”

I stayed recently in a 4 bed room but had it to myself. For the price €19 it was ok, clean bed which was comfy with it's own light. But the shower room wasn't so great, very small with push button. The toilet stank of stale urine infortunatly. No lockers in the room, which meant taking anything of worth everywhere with you.
There was a decent bar but had a massive school party hanging around creating havoc. Breakfast is in the price but due to the very early check out time I missed out on it. For the money I can't really grumble but I have been in better for a similar price.
Check out on a week day is 9am!!!!

“never again”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 September 2009

The price-quality-relation is absolutely apaulling. Staying one night we payed 67€ for two people. In return we got: a room smelling like an old rag with in front of the window an airconditioning machine of around 3x3m that would switch on at 7 in the morning, a cleaning lady walking in our room at 8.45AM surprised that we hadn't left already ( check out is at 10AM) and the walls were so thin that we could hear our neighbours breathing.
Our conclusion: never again!

We stayed in a private room for two with ensuite facilities for 2 nights. My friend and I usually stay in budget, good value hotels (maybe 50 to 65 euros in french provinces, 90 euros in Paris), but found it impossible to book a budget hotel in Strasbourg at our budget with 2 weeks notice, so we decided to stay at CIARUS since the reviews were favourable.
The private room was very hostel-like: meaning institutional and basic. My friend remarked that she felt like she was in a refrigerator-I think she was quite depressed by the room. The room was small but quite clean (except for this ugly streak in the toilet). The small beds were quite comfortable. The most inconvenient thing about the room was the shower-it didn't have a tap but one of those knob things which you have to keep pressing so the water will keep running. I understand this is in the interests of water conservation but it meant we couldn't have a decent shower and I didn't wash my hair at all during my stay bcos it was so inconvenient to do so. The shower also had no door and only a shower curtain.
Other than the room, the counter staff were quite helpful, and we could store our luggage in the lockers for free with no time limit. Breakfast (included in room price) was continental, comprising of yoghurt, bread, tea, coffee, etc. The corridors are cold and nondescript and there are many school groups in the hostel. The hostel is about 20 minutes walk from the Cathedral and the town centre.
I think this hostel is quite OK, but not comparable with the nicer, cooler and warmer hostels I've stayed in, like the Circus in Berlin. If you have a better budget or can book earlier in advance, it would be better to stay somewhere else.

“Very good value”

I stay in the Ciarus twice a year when travelling to Strasbourg for meetings. The accommodation is fairly basic, the sheets are clean and the shower is eccentric. Generally very good value for money, but definitely not a place for a quiet romantic break. The food is pretty good - a wide range of hot and cold options served in the canteen restaurant. If you're coming as part of a school party, you'll have a great time! If you're a bit older, the presence of so many excited teenagers can be a bit tiring. The European Parliament meets in the city on four days per month; accommodation is very hard to find on these days so check well in advance.
