“Great location, decent hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 June 2007

Booked this hotel for two nights online for 70 Euros. Strasbourg is an inexpensive city relative to other European cities, and absolutely delightful. A visit to Strasbourg is highly recommended. It is vibrant, not expensive, steeped in history, lots to do, just great.

The hotel is very decent. Great air conditioning for hot nights, located right on a quaint square a stone's throw from the Cathedral. The room was very comfortable, beds were good, pillows small but adequate, bathroom fine, good water pressure. the TV had mostly french and german channels, but had CNN, though the reception varied at different times of day from clear to unwatchable. The hotel offers free internet through an "electricity modem" that is quite neat and works great. Just ask at the front desk.

The only downsides are the distance from the train station (Tram A or D to the main Grand rue then walk to the Cathedral and turn left), and the fact that whenever anyone flushes or showers you know it because the pipes are in the ceiling I suppose. Breakfast is extra and I didn't eat it.

All in all, the hotel is a good value, but if you research, there are other hotels of equal value in town.

But all in all,

“convenient and basic”

Strasbourg was our seventh stopover on our Eurail journey and we came to the city here on suggestion of Swiss friends. When asked what the attractions were they replied: "the river tour, the cathedral and wery, wery good belly treats" (!) This was good enough for me so we caught the mid morning train from Bern and rolled into Strasbourg on a gray, misty morning not at all certain where the Hotel des Arts was located. First thing you should know is the rail station is undergoing a major overhaul that I gather is in anticipation of the arrival of TGV this Spring. Secondly, you might seriously consider a taxi to this hotel due to the street sanitation conditions we observed first hand. As well, the hotel is on the other side of the compact city just steps from the river and unless you are familiar with the bus and tram routes you will be walking awhile down many medieval streets. I won't elaborate any furthur on the sidewalk sanitation issue so as to not offend those with delicate ears out there but suffice to say that if you do walk, at least carry your bag and wear sturdy shoes. Just my subjective opinion of course. In any case we trudged the streets for about 20 minutes, found the cathedral and so immediately located the hotel. They have some sort of door buzzer system and once you get through that walk down the hall and turn left down another hall for the reception. Our room was at least two floors up and we lugged our bags up a narrow staircase and settled into our narrow but adequate room for two nights. To make this short - convenient to cathedral and museums, very spartan breakfast for 6 Euros, OK for a night or two but at 70 Euros per night for two we would say good value. Unfortunately the river tour was closed for sluice maintenance but the cathedral and museums were very wothwhile. We also had two magnificent meals close by. Good belly treats indeed. To secure our reservation we had to E-Mail a credit card to the hotel and I just can't get comfortable with this method in this brave new world we live in but it worked and so far all is well. For our remaining Euro-days we decided that Germany is still the overall winner so after two nights we board the train for Lindau.....................................

  • Liked — location to monuments and dining
  • Disliked — very compact rooms, stairs and hallways

“A real gem in the perfect location!”

I have just returned from 2 nights at this Hotel and I loved it. The location was absolutely perfect. The Hotel is situated on the Place du Marché aux Cochons de Lait and is surrounded by cafes, restaurants and gift shops. It is just a short walk from the Cathedral and the boat tour leaves from just around the corner. I still can’t believe it is only a 2 star hotel and only cost EUR62 a night for a double room. It was incredible value. The room we stayed in was basic enough but was spotless with a very comfortable bed. We stayed in a corner room (102 I think) and it was bright and airy, with three big windows overlooking the square! There were a lot of tourists buzzing about the place, creating a lively atmosphere. I enjoyed that and I didn’t find it noisy like some of the other reviewers. I can’t think of any negatives, only that there is no lift and the breakfast room is a little dull. It is only EUR5 to eat Breakfast there but I would suggest you go to one of the café’s next door and have breakfast in nicer surroundings for a couple of Euro more. Overall I can’t recommend this charming little place enough! I am so glad that we found it. We will be back!

“Great Find!”

Very much enjoyed my stay at the Hotel des Arts. The room was welcoming and the bathroom was clean. You can't beat the location. It is literally upstairs from several cafes and steps from the boat tour and cathedral. It might be a little loud for some people but I found it perfect. There is no parking but just across the river there is a garage for 7,50 euros per day. I traveled for 10 days around France and this was my favorite budget hotel. I would definitely stay here if I return to Strasbourg.

“Great location, great price”

This hotel is a few minutes walk to the Christmas markets, which are just enchanting under the shadow of the Cathedrale Notre Dame. Our room was on the 1st floor, small but adequate for us, quite and if you are looking for a budget hotel this is it, only 60Euro. We are in our fifties and found this a perfect base to explore Strasbourg for 3days. It is next to Palace Rohan and our room looked out to the river. It was clean, warm(stayed there from 27/12) and in a perfect location. Lots of restaurants around. It is an easy 15 minute walk from the main station. Make sure you take the river cruise through Petite France and other areas, good value for money. It leaves from near Palace Rohan.
