“Excellent Location and Friendly Staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

Spent an evening here with family in January, and this hotel was super. The room was spotless, and the location was fantastic. The breakfast was nice, and the antiques around the property were very interesting. The night staff prepared wonderful coffee, hot chocolate, and wine when we were too tired to brave the cold again in the evening after a day of sightseeing. My older children loved the nearby bakery - also open on Sunday - a few blocks down at the end of the street near the river. We'll be back.

Parking is difficult in Strasbourg so bring good maps or a GPS. Buy parking before you arrive.

“Good location and friendly staff”

This hotel is nice but, quite frankly, I expected more from such a highly rated hotel. The rooms are not big (and we had a family suite!), rather simple and show some signs of wear. I think that if you payed a regular rate for these rooms, you might feel a bit disappointed. There were no body care supplies in the bathroom other than soap. Aside from being overpriced (as may be the case with many hotels in Strasbourg), the hotel offers a great location close to all the main sights. The staff is very friendly and sincerely tries to accommodate travelers requests. The breakfast has a good selection of cold and some hot items served in a nice local-theme designed breakfast room. I would recommend this hotel if one can book it at a promotional price.

“Needs to lift it's game and to focus on improving the essentials.”

We stayed three nights in the first week of January based on the Trip Advisor reviews. The location of the hotel was ideal being a short walk from the station and Petit France and an easy stroll to the cathedral. Our room on the first floor faced the internal courtyard at the same level as the glass atrium of the foyer lounge; the flashing Xmas lights on the atrium were appropriately seasonal but created a disco experience for our room, necessitating the shutters to be closed. The room was quite spacious and nicely decorated but the bathroom drains had a horrible smell (we mentioned this discretely to day reception staff and suggested cleaning staff might address it but there was no response from the receptionist and no change to the smell during our stay). During our first shower we discovered the shower gel was empty. The next day the chambermaid replaced the gel and towels but forgot to make the bed! (this was a puzzling 'never happened to us before' experience, perhaps we were the last room to be cleaned and she was in a hurry to get home?). It was not an aberration as the next day she left an empty tissue box for us. The night receptionist was very apologetic when we reported the unmade bed, offered to remedy it ASAP and seemed to be the only staff member wishing to provide service at the hotel.
Breakfast (not well arranged for ease of access, especially when there are larger tour groups) was very ordinary (rubbery, watery scrambled eggs and poor quality range of breads & pastries, unforgivable in Strasbourg). The Wifi access was deplorable - it was ultra slow and kept dropping out.
A disappointing experience for such a lovely city.

“Comfortable and cosy with perfect location”

Small but clean and comfortable rooms. Helpful staff who directed us to the nearest carpark as we hadn't prebooked space in the hotel's own carpark: only a 5 minute walk away and you pay a special rate that is very low. Lovely 10 minute stroll away from the centre of Strasbourg. Excellent breakfast in the morning: not the usual "continental" style of ham, cheese and stale bread, but instead a wide range of charcuterie, cheeses, pastries, eggs, bacon, juices, hot drinks, cereals, fruit. All served in the big beautiful rustic dining room. Would definitely stay here again.

“This is 2nd highest rated hotel in Strasbourg?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

When we checked in, I must admit I was disappointed. I had expected more from the 2nd highest rated Strasbourg hotel on tripadvisor. Since we didn't visit the others, I really cannot compare, but will share our experience.

The positives: It is indeed convenient for those traveling by train, and the staff stored our luggage upon check-out so we could enjoy the city before departing on a late train. The staff is wonderful and friendly, with good suggestions for restaurants and even a late night pizza delivery service. The rooms, and especially the bathrooms, are very clean and modern, particularly for an historic old hotel. The breakfast buffet had a nice variety of options and a wonderful cappuccino machine.

The downsides: The elevator, which had a posted capacity of 4, could only accommodate one person at a time with luggage. Since there was only one elevator, we had to wait for each member of our family to ascend to the 5th floor separately. I wish the staff had explained that our room key must be inserted in a slot by the door to activate the lights. We thought there was some electrical malfunction. There were very few electrical outlets in the room, such that we had to unplug the kettle to free up a single outlet to charge our electronics. The only outlet in the bathroom was limited to shavers, so there was no outlet convenient to a mirror for hair styling. My daughters thought the hairdryer hung on the bathroom wall was a joke and gave up trying to dry their long hair with it. The bed in the Queen room was really the same as the twin bedded room for our kids, except I think they put a single sheet over the 2 mattresses in our room. The twin duvet covers just met in the middle of the bed, so it was hard to keep covered while sleeping.

I think our big mistake was booking a "comfort room." I've had cruise ship cabins that were larger than this room. We had a hard time finding spaces for our luggage where we wouldn't trip over it. I suppose if we had booked a larger room, we may have been more satisfied. As a Best Western Diamond member, we anticipated the benefit of the best available room, but the hotel was fully sold out, so no upgrades were available. All in all, we had a satisfactory stay for a reasonable price.

Room Tip: Spend a bit more for a larger room.

Dear Sir,

First of all, I would like to thank you very much for having taken the time to fill in the electronic review regarding your stay at our property. Your opinion is very important to us.
I am delighted to read that you have enjoyed our location, service and the cleanliness of the room, as well as the contemporary features of the room.
I apologize for not exceeding your wishes regarding the size of the room and elevator. As you have noticed, the hotel is over 100 years old and it is not easy to fit a large elevator in an old building. The Executive and Deluxe rooms are definitely larger than the comfort rooms.
We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you again for a next stay in Strasbourg and remain with BEST regards,
Véronique Siegel, CEO
