“Mixed review”

We stayed at le Marechal on our honeymoon cycling trip, so we had to return for our 25th anniversary cycling redux. This hotel is ideally located in Petit Venice, right along the canal, and it looked remarkably the same to us. Our initial room was so small that we weren't able to move around- we asked for something larger, and lo and behold, we were given the same room we had on our honeymoon! We just wish that the experience of moving rooms had been more pleasant- the receptionist tried to be gracious, but no offer was made to move our bags. We had to do it ourself, through a rabbit warren of stairways. There was a separate tub and shower, and the room overlooked the canal and had lovely old beams in the ceiling. However, the bed was quite hard, and there wasn't much water pressure in the tub. There was now also no bike storage area- we had to lock up our bikes in the courtyard. Dinner in the restaurant was very good, if not outstanding; service was good, but not welcoming. The receptionist's dinner recommendation for the next night was merely okay- Maison Rouge, nothing special. No mention was made at all of our anniversary, not even at check-out, which was very cursory- not even a question regarding how we enjoyed our stay. Our experience here 25 years ago was much warmer and special, but nothing stays the same forever. Too bad.

“Very cosy and beautifull hotel, bad room.”

Very small and dark room with no wiew. bathroom so small we had to sit sideways on the toilet.
Rooms in the mainbuilding are larger and facing either a square or the canal, the price is the same.

Besides for the room, it was very cosy with a superb location.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the main building.

“Beautiful Hotel - shame about the service and beware of some rooms”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 July 2011

My partner and I stayed at this hotel just for one night whilst driving down to Switzerland; we wanted to see Colmar. Indeed the hotel is very pretty inside and out, as is Colmar but a member of SLH? - I am surprised at.

The most annoying thing some hotels do (why o why when it means you will never return?), is to try and fob you off if you are a late arrival with the 'worst room in the house'. I booked a double through booking.com and the room was described as having a 'French bed' - picture showed a good size ornate double. What we were shown to was a 'cupboard' not a room and with a very very small double and a strong smell of mould. I immediately asked to be moved and the grumpy gentleman explained he would have to 'make some phone calls' because the member of staff responsibe had left for the day. Eventually I was shown to a beautiful suite (I would have settled just for the double I expected but this was a lovely change - given only I think because it was the only room left!). It had a lovely big bathroom with a whirlpool bath (albeit an old style one) and a shower attachment (kind of difficult to shower without soaking everything) but the shower had superb pressure so I was fine! (I like my shower pressure - see my other reviews!). The rooom was very ornate with a stunning old door but also had a large modern flatscreen Sony TV - definitely the room I would have if staying a few days.

We took a room service breakfast (expensive but we were tired) and although beautifully presented it was missing certain items - eg we had cornflakes but no milk! Also, no pain au chocolat which was annoying - we called down for the milk (and cheese that had been ommitted) and it arrived with sullen faced staff . Parking was a headache but that was luck of the draw. The hotel is right opposite a public outdoor pay and display but it was full when we arrived (and the next morning). We paid 15 Euros to have a garage because we had a classic car and the garage was a four minute walk - seemingly nothing to do with the hotel and resembled a council lock-up! It was also very small and our car only just squeezed in! If you get a pay and display space, it would be the best and most handy option.

Finally upon departure we hauled our bags out the hotel ourselves (no help from staff who were busy chatting and smoking outside the hotel) - just as we had to do on arrival. There were no friendly smiles or questions if we had enjoyed our stay. I had a sneaky suspicion that something was odd about about the poor service, so on leaving I asked if the Manager was on holiday and was told 'yes'. I replied 'I thought so' and we left!

Definitely a very pretty hotel and certainly the best option in Colmar but as for staff service - someone needs a kick! Oh and the room could do with cobwebbing!

Room Tip: Be specific because the room quality varies.

Hundreds of years old on the outside, antiques and modern comforts on the inside. Desk staff speak english well. Their wine is marvelous.

“A cute romantic hotel, good location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 May 2011

The hotel is located in the center of the old town. And the back of the hotel faced little Venice. (Walk 15 minutes to train station)

We were there during Christmas and New year. There was a nice christmas market right in front. And only a short walk to 4 other markets.

The hotel was nicely renovated but still has a feeling of old time 15th century. Our room was on 3rd floor with 3 windows facing the canal, equipped with everything you need. One little thing is the very low ceiling. Sometimes my head almost hit the chadelier hanging above our bed.

We also had a candle light dinner at its restaurant. Love it. Well, we actually love everything of this town.
