We stayed in nine hotels during our 3 week vacation, and rate this hotel as “fair” (not good or excellent). This was my first stay at this hotel, my sixth trip to Europe, and my party consisted of my wife, 70 Yr old sister and myself. We stayed at the Grand Hotel Bristol (Best Western) 4 – 5 June 2011. Hotel was located adjacent to the train station and an approximate 20 – 30 minute walk to the tourist area. There is an elevator which makes all the rooms readily accessible. Our selected room was #119: Second floor with a double and single bed. The staff was not helpful or courteous: We arrived in Colmar at 11 AM and had to sit in the lobby until we could finally get into our room at 3 PM per the advertised policy (four hour wait): Although my 70 year old sister with her cane was obviously exhausted and needed to freshen up, the desk staff didn’t apparently want to deal with making the maids angry so they never requested that they expedite cleaning our room. Although we could of left our baggage sitting in the lobby so we could go see the sights there were serious concerns: There was no secure luggage storage, there was approximately 20 other bags already sitting all over the lobby, other guests had trouble locating their bags when they returned from their outings, and we were therefore afraid our luggage and/or contents might become lost. We could of left our bags in the rental car except for the fact there was serious parking issues: 1) Although parking garage access was advertised, apparently all the hotel garage parking spots were filled with hotel and restaurant employees, 2) The only parking available was on the street and the maximum allowed parking time was two hours or suffer the consequence of having your car ticketed and perhaps towed, or perhaps broken into because of the hotel being next to the train station and “undesirables” milling about. I sent my wife and sister to see the sights and I sat and continued to guard the luggage and feed the meter from 10 AM until 5:30 PM when all the parking meters became “free” and there was no longer any danger of being towed. This was the only hotel during our three week trip that did not include complimentary continental breakfast (was available at $27 US per person for coffee and rolls). We viewed this stop on our trip as a mistake: 1) Although the room was only $257 US for the one night, we didn’t appreciate the four hour wait to obtain room access, 2) Colmar is obviously not tourist friendly” because their parking situation was aggravating and apparently a method of filling the coffers with unsuspecting tourists who have expired meters, 3) Colmar’s historic old town itself was typical (not unique) and very crowded since it was a Saturday, 4) Because of the crowds it was impossible to locate a restaurant for dinner unless we were willing to wait upto an hour and a half (we found a nice bakery and bought rolls and sweets and took them back to our room). Personally, I would never visit Colmar or this hotel again.
