Being my first time in a hostel, I wasn't expecting much. We stayed in the Newton Street hostel and since we were coming in at 2am and getting up at 10am, it was basically a place for us to sleep. Upon arrival, you are given a receipt-sized piece of paper saying your name and your room number. This gives you access into the hostel past the reception and you also get the keycard to your room for a charge of £1 per key. The lift is only to be operated by staff, so we had to lug our bags up three flights of stairs. There is a luggage room downstairs beside the reception if you want somewhere secure to keep your bags.
The room had 4 sets of bunk beds. You are each given a bed number, though I don't think they check so you can sleep wherever. The beds were ok, just a little creaky and the ceiling was not so pretty to look at since it was just pipes.
The bathrooms for men are on the odd-numbered floors, with the women's bathrooms on the even-numbered ones. The toilets and the showers are in separate rooms, presumably for extra space. I must admit, the showers were hands-down the worst I'd ever had in my life. They were quite like those showers in the swimming pool, as you had to press a button to make them work. The one I used was mildewed and the only clean one was out of use!
The hostel is in a good position, close to the town centre, and we were told there is free tea and toast 24 hours a day, although I wasn't brave enough to sample any. All in all, I think this was a good place to stay since we weren't coming back until 2am and just using it to sleep in, although I did not appreciate the 2 strangers in our room!
