“Grand hotel with charm”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 February 2012

A grand hotel in the centre of Manchester - next to the town hall and close to shopping and night life.
Check in was quick the receptionist even showed a map of where the room was located so as not to be next to a lift - I wanted a quiet room.
The room itself was well decorated - all the usual amenities - did have to ask for and iron to be sent up which was with me in no time, nice bathroom too.
The hotel looked like a great place to go and have afternoon tea - I didn't get the chance.
Only thing I'd say is try and get a room away from the town hall - the clock chimes on the hour during the day - not what you need after a night out.

Room Tip: Good night sleep should be found in a room away from the town hall

“Don't bother - bitterly disappointing”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

On arriving at the hotel I had to walk through a carpet of dog ends (cigarrette butts). The room was not cleaned properly and I could not access the mini bar. I should have been told that on booking in, that by taking the option to pay as you go - and not having my card swiped ( which I could have done) you are not allowed access to the mini bar. On arriving back from the wedding doo I went to at 12.30am I went to bed only to have the function room disco in the room below me until 1am.

Breakfast for which I paid an extra £20 was a disaster - everything was cold and the black pudding was cold and still very red ( raw would be the word - but like hagggis it is already cooked and should be properly reheated. I did not feel it had been heated at all). I did complain to the management and they did deal with my complaint in an understanding way in fairness and I have been offered an upgrade next time. There will not be a next time. This is a definite place to AVOID!!

Dear Ian C,

Many thanks for taking the time to review us and for your comments which I have to say are out of kilter to our usual responses. First of all the hotel operates on a no smoking policy so I'm not sure where the cigarette matter arises from as we do take great pride in the appearance and cleanliness of the hotel.

I'm sorry that although we seem to have resolved your concern you won't be coming back to us; however if you decide to change your mind please let me know personally as I would be delighted to ensure your stay next time lives up to your expectations.

Kind regards

Without doubt one of the best hotels in Manchester, the hotel is a classy old dame - and I really enjoy staying here, everything is of good quality, from the rooms to the service.

Room Tip: Pay for an upgrade.

“Not what I expected”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

My friends and I just stayed over night at The Midland. We had high hopes and were really looking forward to a bit of luxury whilst out for the night in Manchester. The concierge service was good and we used the valet service which was excellent for very little extra to parking the car ourselves. Having checked in we went to our rooms. On route to the rooms I have to say the corridor smelled musty and unpleasant. On entering our rooms I was surprised by the small size of the room and the stains on the wall. Additionally, on the another wall there was a patch of wall which had wallpaper coming off, and bit of wallpaper missing and a botched paint job. Had we arrived earlier I would have asked for a room change but we hadn't got long to get ready before we were going out so we decided to just put up with it. Furthermore, I had arranged for wine and glasses to be delivered to our room for pre going out drinks. I had to ring house keeping twice, once for the right amount of glasses and then to get the wine changed as they had sent two bottles of white wine when I had ordered a bottle of red and white wine. Little things make a difference. Later when we arrived back we had a drink in our room. I pulled the duvet back only to see that the sheets had a stain on them which smelt of sick. It was 1.30 in the morning so I had to endure the smell. I have to say not impressed at all.
