Booked a table for a small family 70th birthday celebratory meal after a personal recommendation from a colleague. Was only expecting/hoping for a decent country pub meal, what we had was so much more than that.
The staff were all extremely professional, but always unobtrusive and the waiter (blonde hair, sorry didn't catch his name) that looked after us in particular could not have given any better service. I think someone else commented, and it's true the service would not have been out of place in a 5 star hotel.
We'd had a quick look at the menu online before booking, but again this didn't prepare us for what we actually found. I can't remember having a pub meal presented this well and the food itself did not disappoint. I think between us we had 2 different starters and 4 different mains and all were very good. Personally, I had the steak in Guinness pie and I can still taste it 24 hours later (in a good way)!
The surroundings were perfect for the occasion. An original looking bar area that could perhaps appear very slightly old fashioned to some, although were just what I would want from a rural pub. A smallish conservatory and a connecting area between with just a couple of tables was perfect for us. The toilets, which can sometimes be a decent gauge of an old pub have been recently re-fitted, were spotless and again were of a higher standard than expected.
You may find it hard to believe, but I'm not one to give praise easily! I'm struggling to find anything to fault. The only thing I can remember was the mushroom starter I had at first seemed a little stingy in portion size for the £6 mark when it came, though the presentation overshadowed this impression. It tasted wonderful and after a main course (no room for sweet), I was full into the next morning. So I guess chef was right all along!
So, service, presentation, food, surroundings, all impressed. It was obvious that everyone was trying very hard to reach a very high standard and they all succeeded. But I think overall it's the food that impressed the most.
It's great to find a pub like this I just hope the same people/set up remain for a long time without complacency setting in. We will certainly do our bit, helping by supporting the business by visiting again soon – can’t wait!
Stayed here on business for 2 nights midweek, rooms are adequate, quite basic but very clean. Accommodation is motel style with a small number of rooms located at the top end of the Inn's car park, The inn is in a very quiet residential area away from busy traffic with parking right outside your door. Had both breakfast and evening meal, which In the case of the latter, is probably one of the best meals I have had out in ages - freshly cooked to order, not microwaved/reheated as in so many establishments. Given the price, I would definitely stay there again when next in the area on business.
The service of the lady host and two young male waiters could not have been better in a 5* hotel. The food was, (Sunday lunch Menu) OK, but probably a little over the top with ingredients. One of our party opted for the pork crackling starter, it came presented with prawns on it! and there was no crackling, just squares of belly pork - bit disapointing. Someone else had the mushrooms, expecting garlic, cream etc - but then it came drizzled with balsamic - no need for the extras.....just do a meal well and let it speak for itself. Aside from this the main courses, which we all opted for various roasts could not be faulted.
The one thing that would stop me returning would be the decor and ambience in the restaurant itself - it was such a disapointment. The little conservatory area looks as though its set up as a wedding venue (in fact we heard someone go into there and ask if it was reserved for a wedding!), its far too 'twee', the same with the restaurant area. Get rid of the carpet and the twee curtains and replace the old fashioned chairs and the place would look 100% better. I personally would rather have eaten in the cosy, rustic bar than in the restaurant.
An absolutely cracking find for me - I don't think I've ever been made to feel more welcome on arrival, or indeed during the entirety of my stay, anywhere else I've been. Even the locals are welcoming and chatty - even to a bloke walking into their local pub wearing a suit and tie.
The food here is absolutely excellent, and great value - it's really worth taking a bit of time over dinner and having three courses, because the starters were fantastic. Some great beers on tap as well.
The pub is in a lovely location - I went for a run and the countryside surrounding the village is beautiful.
The rooms are pretty basic - but clean, comfortable and again, great value, and the breakfasts (as with the rest of the food here) are also superb.
But the thing that makes this place really stand out is the service and the welcome - I will definitely stay here again, and will look forward to it.
