We have just returned from 2 nights at the Tewkesbury Park, and once again we had a lovely, relaxing time.
We had a room on the top floor this time, double aspect (as the estate agents say) with a view of the Malvern Hills. Room seemed a tad smaller than those on the ground floor overlooking the golf course, but it had the king size bed, and the bathroom, as always, was spotless. ( I'm always amazed by reviewers here who state that their rom was "filthy"; we have never found our room to be such, and if anything the bathroom has always been gleaming!)
We had booked a special DBB package and were not disappointed. On the first night, my partner had a steak that was simply huge, with triple cooked chips, and I had a lovely, big, tender chicken breast with pancetta and peas. Our soup for starters was thick and tasty, and our dessert, Eton Mess, wasboth creamy and fruity and nicely served in china cups. On the second night, we both had the chicken, whilst I began my meal with a beautifully cooked sardine (if I was carping, I could say that I'd have liked more than one, but it was very tasty!) and followed it was a warm, light chocolate brownie with ice cream and rich chocolate sauce. Service was, as always, good - a big hello to the lovely Joyce, by the way, she really makes guests feel welcome and at home!
We used the swimming pool and steam room both days. Now, this area is a little tired and could do with some TLC, but it is serviceable, and a nice facility to use after a day out and about, to unwind before you go in for your dinner. We've never used the gym or squash court so cannot comment on that.
A previous reviewer has commented that they had to go outside the hotel and then back in again to get to their room, however you can access all the rooms by walking through the hotel itself and you don't have to go outside on cold nights. It's probably marginally quicker to do so, but is not essential.
Breakfast was good, cooked breakfast and fruit, cereals, juice, toast, tea or coffee, and you could have as much as you liked. We've always found the breakfasts to be good, offering a wide choice and fair quality.
I don't normally go into detail about the food, but I'm aware that some people have criticised it- well, we've been going to TP for a few years and have never had an issue with the food. It has changed, true, depending on the chef, but we have always found it very good and have enjoyed every meal.
We always enjoy our stay here because we have found the service and quality to be reliable over the years no matter which hotel chain has owned it. On the odd occasion that we have had an issue, it has been sorted speedily to our satisfaction. The staff always seem friendly and pleasant and keen to do their best. Some parts of the hotel do need a bit of updating, but that is just a cosmetic improvement - we go there because we always enjoy it, we feel at home there and think that we get good value for money. And it's the quirks (like those 70's style orange lights in the restaurant - but I don't know, in a way, I would miss them if they went!) that make it what it is - although they really do need to do something about the outside lighting as it is a bit dark in places!!
It's also wonderfully situated, with great views. Tewkesbury is a lovely little town with lots of independant shops and a fabulous Abbey, with Worcester not far away if you need some more retail therapy.
We shall be back again!
