“Nice but flawed”

We booked this hotel as it was simply the cheapest in the area at the time - 2 months before we stayed. (cost was only £34 per night though would have shot up to around £129 if booked nearer the time - way overpriced).

The room was of an excellent standard with very modern/stylish fittings. We were missing the cot we requested but the pleasant receptionist soon sorted this out.

Unfortunately the hotel is very, very close to the M6 motorway. It is very difficult to get to sleep when the sound insulation is not up to par - especially when you've a 1 year old child with you. Due to the nature of the motorway this noise continued throughout the night.

Unlike previous comments I must say the cooked breakfast was truly excellent. Lots of freshly cooked, good quality stuff. I especially enjoyed the cappucino machine! Nice variety of cold buffet items too.

Overall, with the very helpful staff, room and food quality I would be tempted to give a higher rating. Unfortunately you really need to get a good nights sleep in a hotel.

Beware if you need those 'zzzzzzzzzz's.

  • Liked — Friendly staff. High quality furnishings/overall quality.
  • Disliked — M6 motorway.

“very nice”

Stayed at this hotel for one night in december and was very impressed by the level of cleanliness. Super sparkly clean shower and crisp white sheets on the bed. Very pleased with price and breakfast was fine. continental with a bit of scrambled egg thrown in. We had a double room and cost was under 50 pounds. We also heard no noise from sunday market. Only slight downside of this hotel is that the dinner menu is a bit boring.

  • Liked — modern and clean
  • Disliked — dinner menu

“God awful breakfast!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2006

Stayed for one night. Online booking website states asy access to NEC....hahah. Took 2 trains to NEC and airport, not a straightforward change of train...... got lost. Not the safest way to travel in Brum.

Breakfast was awful, luke warm, poor quailty bacon and sausages and not enough for everyone. Waiter took ages to refill hot trays. Only put out 4 croissants at a time.... so i never got one :-(. Managed to grab 2 sausages, couldn't eat them .... yuck!! So I did not have anything to eat for my breakky! Staff did not seem to know there job.

No telephone in room, had to ask for one.

I must say that the cleanliness was good. Nothing to do in area, and pretty rough as well.

“Superclean Modern Jazzy Looking Spacious Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2006

I think this hotel has been unfairly judeged in the past. Here is what I think:
Rooms - I stayed in a family room which had a double bed, sofa, LCD TV, writing desk, beautiful lamps, walk in beautiful modern shower. Room very clean very modern very snazzy. Laminate flooring adds to cleanliness feel.

Airconditioning - available in all rooms. a bit difficult to work out but once you do, it runs brilliantly (can take 20-30 mins to heat room up though)

Reception - staff were really pleasant and tried to be helpful. some of the staff are very young and need to develop their communication skills a bit better but in no way were they rude. They also need to simply say things like "sorry to keep you waiting whilst im on the phone, i'll only be 5 mins". Sometimes you would need to ask them to do things twice (eg I wanted a iron and ironing board and they'd forgotten). The night manager was well dressed, pleasant, professional and knew how to fix any problems I had. The only thing that applies to most staff members is that they need to show a bit more confidence in themselves. The customer can read a person when they are lying or unsure (not that any of the staff lied)

Restaurant/Bar - did not try

Check out time 12 noon - and they dont pressurise you. I asked if I could leave a little later and they were really good.

Loved my time in this definately 4 star hotel. one of the best looking hotels i have stayed in. shame no swimming pool. Someone said something about the Sunday Market noise - you can hardly hear it! Are they sure they didnt sleep on a market stall?

  • Liked — snazzy stylish rooms
  • Disliked — air conditioning a bit slow to get off the ground
  • Tips/Secrets — turn the air con on as soon as you get in , and let it do its job and dont turn it off

“Restaurant/Bar service was terrible”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2006

I stayed in this hotel on a business trip. The hotel itself is fairly pleasant although it is located next to Walsall football club. The rooms are clean and modern but are definitely more appropriate for a 1 night business stay rather than a weekend break hotel. The service in the restaurant however was terrible. We had to wait 15 minutes even to be given a menu (which is fairly limited with few healthy options), then when we ordered we were told it would be a half hour wait so we ordered some starters to keep us going.... they arrived about 50 minutes later. The main course arrived 1 hour after we had ordered - 1 meal arrived then we had to wait another 5-10 minutes for the other two meals. Despite having ordered the same meal from the menu (chicken tikka) 1 of the meals had a completely different colour sauce to the other! We ordered some more drinks during the meal and they took 20 minutes to come. Eventually the manager came over and apologised for the delay and offered us a free drink. Having read some of the other reviews it would seem that we were not the only people to experience the appaulingly slow service. I would not recommend eating in this hotel, find somewhere with a better menu and faster service!

  • Liked — Modern bathroom
  • Disliked — restaurant, service and food
  • Tips/Secrets — don't eat in the hotel restaurant
