“Some good and some bad points”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 July 2011

We stayed here for one night as part of a National Holidays trip. We were not too hopeful having read most of the other reviews - and fortunately had not got our hopes up too high.

It is a shame as there were some good points with this hotel however in other respects I have probably been a bit generous giving it a three rating of average.

Now for the good points: the reception areas were nicely appointed, the bar prices fairly reasonable, the evening meal for a coach party was pretty good as was breakfast, the staff were friendly, plenty of hot water and the shower worked well, the tea tray was well stocked.

As so to the bad points: we were given a room right the front of the hotel, the room did smell slightly musty, the secondary glazing was not effective in blocking out the road noise which hardly abated all night plus we could hear an extractor fan constantly humming (as others reported) and to make matters worse the mattress was extremely hard and squeeky and pillows were hard foam efforts which certainly did not aid getting over to sleep, which a numer of people on our trip commented about, so it wasn't just us being too soft. I had about three hours sleep in total which isn't great. All this is before you facter in, sqeeky floorboards, pipes gurgling and a wedding reception with music until 12.30 plus noisy wedding guests making a racket going to their rooms at 2 am.

Some people who were allocated a room towards the back of the hotel reported a reasonable nights sleep but feedback from others was equally as negetive as ours in terms of room confort and the behaviour of the wedding which took over all the reception, lounge/bar areas.

Shame, but I would not need a lot of reassurance about location and standard of room before wanting to stay here again.

Room Tip: Upgrade and be at the back

“Surprised by the hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 June 2011

On arival I was a bit woried as the exterior is not really that nice, dated and the hotel is on a very busy road. Once inside the hotel it is mostly very nice. Th ereceptions area, dining room, bar and our room where all very nice. The room we had was towards the back of the hotel and quite a hike to be honest. Given the main road one assumes this is done to stop complaints from guests, as even at that disatnce the road is audable to be fair.

Our room was very clean and very spacious. Shame they are still useing counterpanes and balnkets for the beds. Not nice and dated now.

The service was excellent Tom the waiter/ bar man was very helpful, the food was of a good standard and we were also helped on checkout by Mark (I think) who was helpful too.

I would stay there again if work took me there. Not a romantc break hotel but functional and pleasant in our experience.

Dear Guest

Thank you for taking the time to write a responce on tripadvisor it really does mean alot to us.

I was really pleased to hear that you liked the hotel and comments regarding the reception, dining room and bar and I'm glad your bedroom was to your liking, clean and spacious. I'm sorry you got a room with blankets only 10 rooms have those as we sometimes get requests for them, however following your comment we are changing the 10 to duvets and are going to keep sheets and blankets and only put those on when requested.

I will pass your comments on to Tom, Mark and the kitchen team who will be really happy that you highlighted them for service and quality of food.

Best wishes

Dear Guest

Thank you for your comments albeit on a negative note. 1/3 of the bedrooms have not been refurbished and we are working through those over the coming months, we also have replacement beds on order for a few rooms which we have highlighted as needs replacing.

Kind regards

“Would stay again”

Whilst the outside is quite shabby and in need of a coat of paint, the bedding was very clean and the bathroom was so white and sparkly you needed ski goggles just to open the door. The staff were cheerful and helpful and the food was excellent. The light bulb in my room didn't work but a young man was there within minutes to replace it-really good service.
Another guest asked where the pool was and was told neither the spa nor the pool was in service any more. The brochure gives the impression that this facility is still available.
My friends and I would stay at this hotel again but it is in need of a good spring clean

Dear Guest

Thank you for taking the time to write this review.. Funnily enough the week after your group left we painted and repaired the front of the hotel. Thank you so much for your kind comments relating to the cleanliness, staff and food our staff will be delighted with your comments when i pass them on over the next few days. I'm glad we responded quickly to replace the bulb. The brochures with the pool have been removed for some time and all third parties have been advised. I will double check this again to ensure guests are not left disappointed. Feedback like yours is vital to us and really does help

Best wishes

Dear Guest

Thank you very much for taking the time to write on trip advisor. I'm really glad you enjoyed your stay and will pass on your comments regarding friendly staff and a clean room to the team who will be delighted. The chefs will be particularly pleased you enjoyed the meals and breakfast.

Yes the town is about 3 miles away and as you pointed out there is a bus stop directly outside the hotel, should you visit us again we have maps to Aldridge a pleasant 20 minute walk with great shops and also some local canal routes if a short stroll is the order of the day.

We look forward to welcoming you back in the near future

Best wishes
