After arriving into Birmingham Int airport a couple of hours later than expected due to flight delays, we decided that instead of travelling the five hours home that evening, we'd stay in the area overnight, and travel on in the morning. As it was seriously last minute, we called a relative who found the Bescot hotel on the internet, with a dbl room for £40. We didn't book it there and then, instead deciding to go have a look first, then take it from there. Just to fill you in, we're not used to staying in 5* accommodation, and we've stayed in places that've been basic, but NEVER this bad.
When we arrived, my husband went into reception where he spoke to a woman. She informed him that the rate was £45, but after haggling, she relented to £40. We got the keys to room 24, and headed there, up stairs and corridors that were dark and dingy, with ripped carpets in areas, and peeling and cracked paint (on one landing there was a hoover, and on another a broken tv!) At first, we thought we had the wrong room, but it soon became apparent that the key didn't fit the lock. My husband had to go downstairs again, and tell the receptionist. He came back with the keys to room 25, which was one flight up again.
When we opened the room door, the smell that greeted us was terrible. The furniture was really old, and falling to bits, the tv was tiny, and sitting on top of a chair, and the bed looked as though it hadn't been cleaned in a good while.
This was all on top of the fact that the window to the room was broken, meaning that the room was freezing, and really noisy (the room faced out onto the road). The window couldn't be opened or closed anymore than the position it was already in. There was a huge crack around the door of the room, the ceiling was painted an odd ox blood colour, and the door didn't close properly. We didn't even look in the bathroom, we turned around, and headed for reception, where we asked for our money back. The receptionist tried to offer us room 25, but my husband stated that there was no way we were prepared to stay there, and asked for our money back, which we got.
We headed another 10 or so minutes up the road where we found a Travel lodge for £50 - £10 more than staying in the Bescot, where we had a comfortable night's sleep. Take our advice - AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
