My husband and I along with my sister stayed here after the annual Proms concert a t Leeds castle. The welcome was pleasant and first impressions were ok. However the double room was a little disappointing for small but numerous reasons. 'It's all in the detail' as the saying goes!
The heavy drapes had parted company with the curtain rail from one or two hooks making it appear a little dilapidated. No nets or blinds either so no privacy whilst drapes were drawn. The carpet was 'tired' and shabby with fraying edges which also contributed to the general overall shabbiness. Light bulbs out in the small en-suite shower room. The door to which wouldn't stay closed and had no lock!
The double bed was what can only be termed a 'roll together' and needs renewing....badly. Overall this room needs bringing into the 21st century! On the plus side it did have tea and coffee making facilities (chipped cup tho!)and a small
fridge.
The twin room occupied by my sister was more spacioubut did not have en-suite bathroom. It is also extremely noisy on the busy main road, I would imagine this was worse being a Saturday night.
The breakfast at Penenden Hesth Lodge was prepared by the proprietor. I felt a little aggrieved not to be offered a full English breakfast on the grounds that 'no meat' is prepared. Presumably for religious reasons. Cold mushrooms, cold hash brown and potato waffle with (hot) scrambled egg did not cut it! Not after a hearty evening of alcohol consumption that is synonymous with picnicking a la proms!
I don't think 4 stars are earned here. I would stay again if I found myself unable to get hotel accommodation in Maidstone but would know to expect a 3 star edtablishment.
