Marriott hotels would, I am sure, be usually associated with big corporate soulless places. This came as a superb surprise. Starting at the reception where the staff are absolutely top notch - friendly, efficient, knowledgeable - like you'd expect at John Lewis.
We stayed just before New Year on our way over to Europe and it was so good that we stayed again on our way home and we will certainly stay again. Our experience on both stays was equally good.
The hotel has only two levels so feels much cosier than a 10 storey corporate monstrosity . Even the bar area is carefully positioned at a mezzanine height so its the same from either floor - very clever .
The Spa and gym areas are superb and open till late at night which gives great flexibility.
The available meals for dinner were certainly good value and had a reasonable choice. I would have a slight gripe with wines which, as is so often the case , were overpriced and certainly compared to the beer. Also, a big group had taken over the entire restaurant in the evening so we had to eat in the bar area which was OK but not ideal as they have insufficient eating height tables .Eating on a bar stool height chair is not really that comfortable. However, as at reception, staff were very attentive and efficient so it was not a big issue .
The only MAJOR gripe is that they charge £15 a day for wi-fi internet access. Trip Advisor should start a campaign or flag as a major item those hotels that charge like this. £15 is what BT charge for broadband for a month. There is simply no excuse for this - luckily we noticed just in time on our smartphones so we did not incur the charge. If it were £1 or £2 , it would be fine but why the excessive charges? It cannot be such a major cost if Road Chef can give it for free
