“Good facilities, great food - felt more personal than a chain hotel...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

I spent ages trying to find a quality hotel in the Surrey/Sussex area that allowed dogs. I'm so glad that after much searching I finally found the Barcelo Basingstoke (and that for once I didn't read the TripAdvisor reviews very carefully before booking). The hotel has good leisure facilities, with a pool that is possibly better suited to families and casual travellers like myself looking for relaxation, rather than serious length-swimmers. We had booked dinner, bed & breakfast, and I have to say that dinner was much better than I expected from a chain hotel. The 3 course table d'hote menu was priced at 25gbp, which I think would have been very good value given the quality of the food and presentation. and to have it included in the room rate made dinner an absolute bargain. The staff were very friendly and helpful - when I had a problem with the heating in the room, extra heaters were very quickly provided.
The hotel is in a quiet and attractive location, and I wouldn't hesitate to return - but for two nights next time.

“Dirty, dated and another unpleasant stay...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 December 2011

I have tried to aboid this hotel given my last trip but I couldn't find another hotel with avaliablity near to my office. This hotel has got even worse since the last time I stayed 6 months ago. The hotel is dated and you can smell the damp as you walk through to the rooms on the ground floor.

The room wasnt much much better - it feel unclean with old bathroom fittings and generally dated. The carpet and bedding didn't get much better and when room service arrived, the room didn't even feel clean enough to eat your dinner in.

One thing I will say is that staff really do try even if a little awkward. My colleague and I checked out at the same time and got the same questions in the same order even though we were standing right next to each other, They are about the only thing that makes this hotel bearable. I had hoped to use the gym but took one look at the pool and thought again - looked and felt unclean.

I will never stay in this hotel again and choose to stay a little further away from our offices.

Thank you for your review and please accept my apologies for the fact you did not have a good experience. I am sorry that you found the bedroom to be dirty, which I agree wholeheartedly is unacceptable. Naturally, we would have been very keen to address this issue at the time - indeed we would have moved you immediately to a clean bedroom if a mistake had been made and a room had not been serviced satisfactorily. Unfortunately, from this review alone, I am unable to ascertain whether you did or not. I genuinely hope you did, and we were able to rectify the situation immediately. I am also not able to tell when you stayed with us either, however I am pleased to say that at the end of October we repaced all our bedding in all 100 bedrooms including new bedrunners and cushions, so they certainly are not looking in any way tired now. Again, my sincere apologies if you felt the bedding was not of a good standard during your time with us.

My team do try very hard to be "personable", and judging by the many compliments on here regarding the friendliness of the team, I believe they generally do a great job of that. I am sorry that you perceived that to be awkward. I think in all fairness, its probably more a case of some being more experienced and confident than others.

Thank you again for your comments

Regards
Claire

“Family break”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 November 2011

We won a 2 night break at a golf day and even though we live only 3 miles from the hotel booked to stay. What a wonderful surprise right on our doorstep. The welcome was friendly with our son being given a 'kids bag' containing toothbrush, fllannel and games book - he was really happy with it even though 8 years old.
The room was big, great king size bed for us and comfortable fold out bed for our son. Spotless bathroom and when we pointed out the over sink mirror light was flickering on second day and then stopped it was fixed whilst we were out. Only thing that would have been useful would have been a retractable line over the bath - not sure where to dry our costumes without them dripping on the floor.
Super food in the bar - freshly cooked and served well. All staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Second night we ate in the restaurant and although not cheap it was worth it. Breakfast each morning was priced £12.95 but excellent fresh choice and lovely way to start the day.
The swimming pool was real hit with our son - hot tub, sauna and steam room for us - all well maintained and supervised by camera.
We will be back for a relaxing break - well done Barcelo. Were expecting average time in chain hotel but you ecceeded our expectations.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back look over field so nice and quiet.

“Swimming pool?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 November 2011

As members of the National Trust, we have been visiting a number of gardens an estates in the area.
Since we have two children, we did not choose for a bed and breakfast: after a day of touring, the children want to relax in a swimming pool.
Unfortunately, this was the poorest swimming pool area we have ever seen in the U.K.
We were very disappointed.
The staff at the reception and in the dining room was helpful.
I did not get the value I expected.
The other Barcelo hotels are in a much better state.

Thank you for your positive review regarding our friendly staff. They certainly are a helpful and professional team and I am very proud of their focus on Customer Service. I was sorry to read that you and your family were disappointed with the swimming pool as the large pool is generally very popular with families, in particular children. I do hope you will consider returning on another occasion.
