“Call in the Hotel Inspector!”

Having stayed at several hotels around Gatwick before and after holidays we were dismayed to find that the Britannia Lodge runs its shuttle service on a rigid schedule, unlike the last hotel we stayed at that send a shuttle promptly for us as soon as we arrived at the airport. Thus, having arrived back at Gatwick in sub-zero temperatures at 10.30pm, we had to wait until 11.45pm for the shuttle to pick us up. Unfortunately this was a portent of what was to come.

After checking in and opening our hotel room door I thought there must have been some mistake and that we'd been allocated staff accommodation. A dingy room with pull cords like those found in sheltered housing awaited, with a "disabled" bathroom and two single beds placed foot to foot along one wall (we are a married couple!). The room was freezing cold, and the TV out of the ark. The single duvets on each bed were so small that they would have barely covered a small child, and so it was that, too exhausted to go back to reception to ask to change rooms, we spent a cold and miserable night. Never again, and before a hotel rep replies to this telling me we could have changed rooms, I submit...why put your guests in such a room at all?

Room Tip: Avoid Room 1101!

“Excellent Deal and handy for Airport”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

We booked a Sunday night DBB deal at GBP 46. At that price, it was a good deal. The room was a little dated - but clean enough - and the meals had a canteen quality about them. A bottle of house wine was included. Very easy to get to the long term parking at Gatwick (took 10 minutes). If you need somewhere to stay for an early morning Gatwick flight, this fits the bill. As good as the other budget chains. If you can get a reasonable deal, I think it's worth the stay.

“Not that bad!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

We checked in with trepidation after reading reviews and requested not to have a Lodge room.
We were given a top floor room which was very comfortable although dated. Being January it was very cold outside but we were very warm, cosy and it was clean.
Downstairs the bar was inviting sitting in front of the fire and we had a bar meal instead of using the restaurant. This was fine and very inexpensive.
Parking was an issue, we arrived early afternoon and had the last space. However, we were not leaving the car there, just driving to airport parking next morning which was very convenient.
We paid £67 for 1 night hotel and 2 weeks APH parking so were happy with that!

“Avoid!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

Cheap, and not quite worth the price. My wife and I were, for reasons not known to us, given a room apparently designed for use by disabled persons, with two single beds facing each other toe-to-toe. Our woefully inadequate duvets smelled funny, and the walls of the place seem to be made of stiffened tissue paper; you can hear those in adjacent rooms breathing.

“Horrible experience”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

My night in this hotel was one of the worst of my life, it was dirty, noisy and the food was awful.
I had no way to contact someone to complain, you cannot even find an email address on their website to talk about it !
