I did not stay in the hotel as I live in the village of wroughton but thought for a belated valentine's meal my husband and I would visit the restaurant part of the hotel called Harveys. On first appearances all seemed well. I'd been before for a Sunday roast a few months before and enjoyed it very much. I was a little suspicious that the restaurant was so quiet. Only two other tables were taken. We ordered a bottle of wine and had a starter each. I had the moules Marnier and my husband had goat's cheese spring rolls which sounded interesting but in actual fact was dull and totally uninspiring. It was also very small only two miniture spring rolls with some unripe chopped mango. For the main I had the ribeye steak with triple cooked chips, flat field mush room and vine ripened tomatoes. My husband had the burger and triple cooked chips. Well we were amazed that something that has supposedly been triple cooked could still be raw in the middle. The chips were rough. My steak was bland and the vine ripened tomato was a single pale orange lump of watery pulp. I was also surprised to discover only half a mushroom. Alongside this was a jug of luke warm single cream which i assumed to be the pepper corn sauce. After having to locate the waitress at the bar she came over and took our plates away to rectify the situation. Two minutes later the same plates of food were returned to us. The only difference being that the triple cooked chips had been dunked back in the fryer for a couple of minutes and my rare steak had been nuked in the microwave so that it was now medium with half cooked peppercorn sauce congealed on top of it. Needless to say we didn't eat much more and told the waitress we werent happy. She took the plates away and we overheard her tell the chef off. They did take the wine off of the bill but that was all that was offered. I really think things have gone down hill at the ivy house hotel and in future we'll be sticking to the Chinese and the chippy. A shame really as the only other place in wroughton to serve meals is the white hart so we'll be going there all of the time now, but at a cheaper rate and better quality food there's really no competition.
