First of all, have to say that for the price paid, it is OK to be fair, but there are a few issues, alas. First of all, the bed was a bit on the soft side. The restaurant and bar not that great, in the latter, prices a little high, menu a bit limited, and not too quick. Only used the restaurant at Breakfast, where service is a little uneven, somedays there was food cooked to order, and others a buffet. The food was better quality with the former, the latter not so good, especially as some items had run out although again to be fair these were replenished on request. it did sort of get cleared up 10 minutes before breakfast time officially over, but maybe no further guests taking breakfast that day. Particularly noticeable was the lack of clearing tables.
The buffet was fairly average in terms of the food on offer, nothing to distinguish it. Staff are not too attentive, either, although again to be fair some were trainees.
The pool/sauna/steam room pretty good, although the latter was closed for maintenance one day, and there is a well equipped gym.
The hotel is in a quiet village, where there is little else of note, save for two pubs; The Carriers Arms, the nearer of the two, in the village, and The Carpenters Arms at the other end of Old Vicarage Lane, just before you reach the railway bridge. Neither serve food on Sunday evenings, and The Carpenters not on Mondays either. They both do good food, though, and a couple of real ales from local breweries. The latter is a short walk away down a lane that has little in the way of streetlighting.
Hotel is well located for exploring the surrounding countryside by car, with Uffington White Horse, Silbury Hill and Avebury stone circle in the vicnity. Directly opposite the hotel is Nightingale Lane which leads to some walking trails which are well marked out and signposted.
