“Great hotel but no sleep”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

The hotel was recommended by colleagues for an overnight in Derby and made a very good first impression. The check in staff were friendly and quick and the room was spacious and comfortable. It was warm in the room but I turned the heating down before going out for dinner and by the time I got back it was down to a reasonable temperature.

The bed was comfortable but unfortunately the room was very loud, being on a corner directly on the main road. This made sleep impossible for the first night. Considering the hotel has been completely renovated I fail to understand why more was not done to improve the soundproofing of the room.

The breakfast was very good. After breakfast I requested a room change and this was done quickly, without any fuss and the receptionist was very appologetic that I had lost a nights sleep. The new room was at the back of the hotel with double glazed windows to improve sound-proofing which made me wonder why these were not also fitted to the room at the front.

When I got to the hotel car park the car was covered in bird s***. I realise that the hotel can do little against such natural "incidents" but as it appeared that the birds concentrated on the one small area of the car park perhaps the management should consider blocking off these spaces or at least posting a warning to people who wish to park there?

That evening I settled down to sleep in a nice quiet room, only to be wakened at 4:30 by the fire alarm. This turned out to be due to a guest showering with the bathroom door open so that the smoke detector was set off by the steam. When the fire brigade arrived the fire alarm was switched off which caused the main doors to close (they obviously open automatically when the alarm goes off). This left everyone stood outside in -4 degrees until the night porter came and re-opened them This was probably only 5 minutes but felt a lot longer!

So the hotel was fine, the staff friendly and efficient but after 2 nights there I was like a zombie on the Friday morning, unable to concentrate in work and fortunate that I did not have a long distance drive ahead. This is not what I expect from a 4 star hotel.

Thank you for your review, and thank you for your many positive comments about the hotel and its team. I do apologies that your sleep was interrupted on the second evening by a fire alarm, we take our guest welfare very seriously and follow the correct procedure were the sounding of an alarm is concerned. I am pleased your bedroom was changed swiftly for you. With regards to the issue with the birds the hotel has invested a significant amount of money in bird proofing, looking at the picture you posted, your car was parked under some tree’s at the back of the hotel, for obvious reasons we do not pigeon proof a tree. This isn’t a ongoing issue at the hotel, but it is something we will monitor.

“New Years' Eve 2010”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

I am, by now, not writing about a recent stay, however the quality of this lovely hotel is still impressed in my mind. The building itself is very grand, with gorgeous decor and a really imposing front reception with high ceilings and pretty wallpaper. The room was a nice size and the bath was very generous, not like most hotel baths which seem to be tiny! Nice big bed, tv, dressing table everything you need.

After going out and arriving back rather late to find the doors locked, a member of staff was at the door letting us in within seconds, which was most relieving! Had a good nights sleep, hotel was perfectly quiet. Next morning we were quite late back for breakfast (hangover) but the friendly receptionist assured us this was okay as most guests had been the same! They even extended the breakfast hours, but unfortunately we were 15 minutes too late downstairs :( Not their fault but judging by the overall quality of the hotel, it would have been a lovely breakfast!

Highly recommended, one of Derby's best I'm sure. Definitely the best I've visited.

We had a lovely time, old grandiose hotel, large, high ceilinged bedrooms, gigantic beds, excellent food, courteous staff, It was my wifes 40th birthday and they did little extra touches for her that helped make it a special stay. Would recommend

Room Tip: Room 281 was facing the gardens and so was nice and quiet at night...

“Excellent business hotel in prime position”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

One night stay but room clean & comfortable, bathroom clean with bath & shower, the usual request for extra teabags & milk was answered in very friendly manner, nice young staff. Breakfast bar was adequate & friendly. Would thoroughly reccommend it!

Room Tip: Take a room at the back away from Midland Road traffic

“ON ROUTE TO BOSTON USA”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2012

My Husband booked this hotel for us on 5th january as we d moved out of our own house and needed a room over night before our flight to boston. We were very tired and was glad the correct room was booked although a good evening would have been nice instead of fill your details in on the card robot style! The room was on the front and was unbearably hot all night .We used the portable fan and turned the heating off and opened the wnidow..Also the shower was in danger of scalding someone as it was operated very low down on the taps. The fan in bathroom did nt work .I also thought the room colours were too dark but I suppose that is a matter of taste .We went out for the night and when we arrived back the lift was out of order was this to deter undesirables !!! we did wonder as bubbles is around the corner !!!
Breakfast was ok the toaster is best part about it.!!

Thanks for your review, I was very disappointed to see you had awarded us three points looking at your marking I do feel this is a little unfair in a number of the areas. If any of our guest have a issue please let us know and we’ll resolve the problem as fast as we can. I do apologies if the rooms was to hot, we do try to keep the hotel at a decent temperature to ensure all our guest are comfortable and all bedrooms have a TRV value on the radiators to control the heating or to knock off completely if needed.
