“Lovely hotel shame about the service”

My partner booked us into this hotel for our anniversary this weekend. It was a hotel we saw last time we stayed in Gloucester, and wanted to experience the history of the place. The room was absolutely stunning, although the window had been left open, and no heating on when we arrived. We had a fairly mediocre carvery dinner that evening, which was a good price. The music over in the bar area was good, although some loud patrons drowned out the singing some of the time. The boiler had packed up, and we were left with a freezing room (the night before it snowed?!) and despite asking for a heater, no-one came to explain the problem, or bring a heater. We were left to sleep in our day clothes under the covers, not daring to put our heads out incase we froze! The following morning we were furnished with a brief apology from the owner. The glasses were filthy at the table and the breakfast slightly greasy with hard beans and cheap sausage. Later that evening, we came down for an evening meal, only to be told the kitchen was closed (9pm) despite the advertising claiming they served until 9.30pm. Quite disgusting considering it was freezing, snowing and we were residents.
On the whole, I would say the hotel is stunning and the staff friendly, but the small details can make a weekend go from good to great. Perhaps some of these pointers need to be considered??

Room Tip: Depending on what you're looking for. The Oak has a large four poster bed, but is right over the...

“Not bad for the price but Gloucester itself is a rubbish weekend away”

Stayed here for a weekend February 2012. £49 for a double room and breakfast for me and the wife. Lovely listed building. Helpful staff. Check in time is 2 pm and there is no flexibility on that. The receptionist did let us leave our bag behind the counter though.

There is no car parking at all. You can park at the Kings Walk Shopping Centre car park nearby. Take your ticket and on checking out of the hotel the receptionsist will validate it and it's only £2.50.

The room was nice. Clean. Comfy bed. Little telly that worked. Kettle and tea/ coffee sachets etc. Bathroom a bit shabby with a knackered blind and a piece of gaffer tape holding the shower curtain rail up. Clean though. Loads of hot water. The toilet pan hasn't seen a bottle of bleach for a while and there were a couple of encrusted 'stains' below the water.

We stayed in Room 104. The managers flat is above this and they use the fire exit door (adjacent to Room 104 door) to access their flat. This door is is left open. Draft coming through and under our hotel door, plus fire exit door banging a lot. 7.00 am sunday morning we were treated to full blast radio music from the managers flat above us.......thanks.

Breakfast was great.....full English.....toast.....cereals.....fresh fruit.....yoghurts.....and newspaper to read.

We like to go away for weekends to places we haven't been before. I expected Gloucester to be quaint, old and lovely. It is a mixture of quaint/old and 1960's garbage architecture. Gloucester is ROUGH. I mean dog rough. We saw some real pondlife scummy people. Maybe they stay there after spending time in Gloucester jail.

We went round the sights. Cathedral was nice. The docks were underwhelming. The Gloucestershire army museum is just under a fiver each to get in.....we didn't bother.

The shopping centre is nothing special. There's loads of shops shut up for sale. The pubs are ROUGH. If you want to take a walk on the wild side go to the Regal. This is a former cinema which is now a Wetherspoons. After drinking in here I will never criticise my home town of Derby again. Whilst we were there the police stormed in and arrested two guys, I saw a guy spit on the carpet, and the bad language was outrageous in front of children in there. Even in Derby the managers of the Wetherspoons pubs there won't tolerate bad language.

Conclusion: Nice hotel, good value, good service, rubbish town.

Room Tip: Ask for a room which is not under the managers flat/ next to the fire exit door (which is used as ac...

WHAT A FANTASTIC BUILDING ! but what a let down , my husband and i stayed the one night room 212 , we found a lovely room but a dirty carpet full of stains and while taking a bath noticed that the toilet was filthy and the area around the toilet had obviously not been cleaned .excrement from previous occupants was clearly visible around bowl ! very steep stairs but this is part of the character of the building ! the other let down was the breakfast very poor nasty cheap sausages and very minimal quantities , me and my husband are not big eaters but we left hungry ! the service was ok they tried there best to please but weren't well trained has our full breakfast was brought out while we were still eating our cornflakes but she insisted on hovering round us till we finished ! would we stay again no ! what a shame this building deserves more !

“New Inn Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

I have stayed at this charming hotel a few times now and will certainly stay again when working in the area or when I get chance to take my family to Gloucester for the weekend. The staff are friendly rooms are clean and comfortable and the food is great too with the bonus of a real ale bar to boot. The hotel is a historic building with lovely creaky floorboards in places and lots of interesting history.

“Looked forward to historic building, got filth.”

After reading glowing reviews about how old and full of character and charm the New Inn had, my boyfriend and I were looking forward to our stay.

Having stayed in an old Georgian Inn in Hay-on-Wye a few days prior and a Victorian house in Penarth, we appreciate older properties with quirky features(uneven floors, exposed beams, etc). All that excitement vanished when we entered the New Inn. After having to find an employee to check us in(in the pub of all places), we were a bit annoyed but not overly so. We were happy to have a place to stay near the Gloucester Cathedral(which is stunning).

Upon entering room 214, we realized that there were many issues. My heart sank as I realized we had to stay the night. I didn't mind the uneven floors, decor or the exposed beams. I find those details to be special and make staying in an old property unique. However, upon entering the room we found ourselves killing half a dozen fruit flies(?). The thought of them flying overhead as we slept made us uncomfortable, so we did our best to find them all before we slept.

The carpet looked like it hadn't been cleaned in about a week. I've never actually seen a dirtier carpet in a hotel(new or old). I was scared to take my shoes off and decided to wear 2 pairs of socks so I wouldn't be in contact with the filthy carpet. The carpet is dark so it was easy to see gray dust everywhere, along with other lint and crumbs. Stains were present also, but I didn't feel bothered by them as I did from the even layer of dirt sitting on the carpet. Maybe the vacuum used is just really weak?

Having taken pictures of every hotel I've ever stayed in(for memories), I took none. I didn't want to remember the filth. In hindsight, I wish I had, to show future customers that I am not being picky. My boyfriend, who worked in a hotel a few years ago when he was in college, was equally appalled.

When we entered the bathroom we noticed that it was dirty. At the base of the electric shower panel, there was a thick layer of crusty orange growth. It was at least 6 inches long and looked hard. This couldn't have grown in one day and I imagine it has been here for a few weeks. I've never seen that in my life and there is no excuse for it. Rust is one thing, but this was thick and crusty.

Lastly, just a tip for anyone who still wants to stay in this room, number 214. The pub is directly underneath so you will hear dance music until about 11pm(on Thursday anyway). We were tired, but decided to watch TV until the pub closed. Luckily it did so around 11pm, so we were able to sleep. If you need to sleep earlier than 11pm, just bring earplugs.

Having read responses from the management, the condition of this room makes sense. They do not graciously answer to complaints, they just respond in a defensive manner. At the forefront of customer service is taking in criticism with an open mind, not an aggressive and angry attitude. Maybe because the rates are low, we shouldn't expect a better attitude or service? When I see rude management I just run the other way, which I should have done when I read reviews prior to booking.

As I only stayed in room 214, I can only recommend that you not stay in this room, for the reasons I listed. I do not know about the condition of the other rooms (and why have *one* dirty room and many clean rooms?). The noise was acceptable(including the loud pigeons in the morning), but the filth was not deserving, even at the low room rate. We didn't try the complimentary breakfast, considering the filth we experienced. I did not want to tempt fate and get sick.

Another tip: Figure out where you will park, before you get to the hotel. Since the hotel is located in a pedestrianised area, you have to know where to park before getting to the hotel. Parking is not obvious, so a little research beforehand will save you from driving around in a circle.

The lessons I Iearned from this experience are to pay more for a room and run the other way when management responds to complaints in a defensive and rude way.

Room Tip: If you must stay here, do not stay in room 214. Room and bathroom is filthy and it is above the pub...
