“was it unfortunate we picked the coldest weekend of the year?!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

just stayed one night and primarily picked this hotel due to pool, sauna, steam room etc (which was good). Room cold when we checked in but did warm up, although draft coming under door. Room clean but basic, and although pillows comfortable, mattress was dipping in middle. Pity we hadn't seem previous TA's comments about asking to be moved if given grond floor rooms near pool area as we did notice chlorine smell too:D We were one of 2 parties in the restaurant (6 people in total) and had eaten there just because it was snowing. Food ok but not great and certainly not worth £60+ for a couple of pizzas, 2 starters and a curry (which had a grand total of 3 mini chicken fillets in it), 2 lagers and 2 soft drinks. The restaurant and bar area were cold so after moving into bar and standing around the 2 watt mini heater for 5 mins we retired for the night. Situation not helped by a barman arguing that the communal areas not warm, despite both the restaurant manager and front desk manager confirming the heating wasn't working !!

Room Tip: like previous TA said, avoid ground floor near pool

“Dire check in and worn out room”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

Bad first impression tried to check in and one of the two check in staff stopped and started to do some un-necessary admin- extending my check in time by 10 mins . The room allocated was next to the spa and there is a distinct smell of chlorine in the air. The room was worn and you can hear the guy next door eating his dinner. When checking out , wrong transactions were added to my bill-it was removed but no apology. Otherwise, bog standard hotel and on business you can always get a fair discount

Room Tip: Ask for upgrade if given ground floor rooms near spa entrance

“Solid but rather tired”

The staff are friendly and the restaurant is good. The rooms are overdue for refurbishment and I would not really bother to go for the 'Executive' option. I have stayed in better standard rooms at some Premier Inns. So the overall experience is 'OK' but not much to shout about... except the pool of course.
The pool, steam room and sauna make most of the rest of the hotel forgiveable. If that is to be a significant aspect of your stay then its worthwhile.

Room Tip: Rooms 119 and 140 are executive rooms with a lovely view of a brick wall. The rooms are poky for exe...

“Worn out and overpriced”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2012

I am continually surprised by the apparent success of this hotel. It is very mediocre in every respect:
- small, shabby and dated rooms
- depressing, dingy corridors leading to the rooms
- poor quality, expensive restaurant with variable service
- canteen style, uninspiring breakfast
- nothing location, on a roundabout off a ring-road

And to cap all of this off, its not cheap! Internet best buy rates are regularly around £100 and our company's corporate rate is only slightly below this.

I stay here occasionally for work because it is next to a client's office, so the fact it is a bit of a dump is outweighed by the convenience factor. I'm astonished that it has a 4 circle rating on TripAdvisor. However whenever I stay here it does seem to be running at a high capacity. But that doesn't change the fact I feel inherently depressed whenever I arrive at this place!

It is in need of an urgent makeover, upgrade in service standards, improved breakfast (let's just say that eggs Benedict and freshly squeezed OJ are not part of the current offering!) and a restaurant that opens beyond 9:00pm!

In my view, if you don't need the specific location, then I don't see any reason to stay here. There are a lot of better places within 20 mins drive.

Room Tip: Ask for an upgrade to an Executive room - these have a lot more space.

“Solid out of town chain hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

So long as you don’t mind being just off (but well screened by planting from) one of Gloucester’s ring road roundabouts and well out of town at Barnwood, this is a good base for touring the area by car. We added a one night stay in an executive room onto a Groupon deal at Hatherley Manor as part of a pre Xmas Cotswolds trip. This a low rise out of town hotel probably built in the late 1970’s for the old Post House chain or similar. We were lucky to get to reception just as two large groups of people finished checking in. Although we were initially allocated one of those horrible inter connecting rooms that looked out on a brick wall and the hotel was quite busy it wasn’t a major problem in finding us an alternative room, so long as we didn’t mind the wait, which we didn’t as we went off into town and settled in after dark.

The rooms all seem to be quite small but comfortable. Ours faced away from the road so was really quiet. The large bed was supportive without being hard. For the size of the room the impressively sized 37 inch LCD TV was actually a bit OTT – a 32 inch TV would have been fine. The small internal bathroom was OK. The shower above the bath was great with a very sensible curved shower rail so the curtain won’t stick to you, as it can in some hotel bathrooms. The rooms must have been refurbished in the past few years. Like many hotels, the main problem here is that no-one has taken the trouble to think about where you need good lighting for shaving and doing makeup or power points so the hair dryer cable reaches a mirror.

Breakfast was acceptable although the waiting service was not that good. Unless you’re lucky enough to be offered tea or coffee when you sit down it could take you ages to get someone’s attention. Guests were also queuing at the desk while quite a few tables remained uncleared as staff sauntered back and fore. Someone really needs to give breakfast service a good shake up. We didn’t eat dinner in the hotel so can’t comment about the evening meals. We just thought that the total cost with wine was higher than we would have wanted to pay if we had been eating in. As we were only using the hotel as a stop over we didn’t use the leisure facilities either. These are run as a private leisure club so we would expect them to be a better quality than similar facilities that are run in house for hotel guests only.

We’re happy to recommend this hotel as a base for the area.

Room Tip: Beware of inter connecting rooms
