“No hot water, paint chipping, wallpaper pealing, furniture worn. Excellent breakfast.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012 via mobile

Bathroom: We didn't have constant hot water (on and off both morning and evening - had to keep jumping in and out of shower as temperature changed from hot to very very cold. I persevered (getting in and out) my partner gave up on the idea of showering at all! The bathroom had a strange smell. Lovely molton brown goodies, nice bathrobes, great quality towels, a real hairdryer.

Drinks: kettle lead didn't reach the plug from the tray table (had to brew up on the floor). There is no mini bar. We had a Coffeemaker and fresh coffee in room and full size cups (this is a great idea).

Food: breakfast was great! Good choice, all made to order, good sized portions! Possibly the best hotel breakfast I have had (and I have stayed in lots of hotels). Resturant closed other than for breakfast.

Decor: communal areas were beautiful but the rooms are not as appears in the pictures (or at least ours wasn't). The wall paper was peeling and lumpy. The paint was chipped. The furniture was worn (chipped paint). The curtains and blinds were stained from damp. The bedside lampshades were very wonky (not sure if they fitted bases properly)

Other: communal areas were cold with lots of plug in heaters - couldn't take coat off in bar! As someone that spent my student years as a chambermaid I would say it could be much cleaner - the inside of the windows must not have been cleaned for months.

Location: good only a short walk from centre.

Staff: friendly and helpful.

Overall - a hotel without hot water, adequate heating and a restaurant should not have four stars.

“ok on the surface but poor underneath!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

On arrival was quite impressed with this hotel, even though there was a bad drains smell in the bar area. The Receptionist Ruth was very pleasant and helpful. We were on a ('here come the girls' hen party package). We were given a so called family room for 3 of us. Well the room was barely big enough for 2 people never mind 3 adults There was a huge double, one single and one pull out bed (suitable for small child) which left no floor space to move a round.
We complained to the receptionist and were told that there was nothing else available. Things just got from bad to worse,
no coat hangers, then the toilet would not flush, we callled reception again, who said there had been a problem for quite sometime with the loo, and we had to flush it slowly. This was a waste of time as it continued to flush ad hoc. The window in the bathroom was blowing a gale through it and the shower was more or less a dribble, not 4 star standard whatsoever. On checkout we asked to speak with the Manager or Owner, who was not available, a phone call was made to her, to which she asked us to send her an email!!!!! Not happy with this response we refused to pay for the room
as we beleived it not to be up to 4star standard (I have to say that the food and service at the White Hart sister hotel where we had dinner was exceptional) but we would however pay for all meals and drinks. This made the manager on the other end of the phone take action and eventually gave us a small discount on the room. I would certainly not re-visit this hotel after the experience my friends and I had.

“A real shame! This hotel is not what it seems from the website.”

My husband and I stayed here for a night between Christmas and New Year and booked a superior room. I used to live in Harrogate and actually used to work in this hotel as my first weekend job (many years ago!) and so was really looking forward to staying here. Unfortunately we were incredibly disappointed.

The lobby of the hotel looked really lovely but walking up the stairs to our second floor bedroom the decor was really worn and shabby. I was hoping that the bedroom would be well maintained but this was not the case. Our room was a lovely size but really jaded. The window was closed but the wind was blowing though somehow, the blind in the bedroom had water stains on it, the furniture was shabby chic but the chest of drawers had a large chunk taken out of it. There was also a piece of material that had been attached to the ceiling with Velcro to cover a skylight but this was no longer fully attached. Staples had been used to attach it but it had not been successful. The bed looked great but was very hard so sleep comfortably.

The bathroom looked stunning with a slipper bath in the middle of the room with a shower over but unfortunately the bathroom smelled like public toilets, the shower was not very strong and the taps on the sink barely came over into the sink! We did complain about the smell in the bathroom and they provided us with an air freshener spray!!! We complained again and were informed that it was the ivy on the walls outside. However there was no ivy on the walls! There was a downpipe on the wall of our bathroom and so perhaps this was the real problem. If we were booked to stay here for longer than a night we would either have insisted on moving rooms or just left to stay somewhere else.

The breakfast was also not worth what we paid for our stay.

I have to say that I am disappointed to have to give this hotel such a scathing review, however I wouldn't recommend it as a place to stay and am also concerned that other people who are looking for quality with a touch of luxury will over pay to stay here.

I am also very surprised that Mr and Mrs Smith have their brand associated with this hotel.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 22.

“Great boutique hotel”

My dad and his wife had raved about this crazy hotel decorated like a brothel (their words!) so my husband and I were intrigued to say the least. We were pleasantly surprised to find that what the senior citizen set considers brothel-like we found opulent and fashionable. We didn't notice any of the shabbiness other posters have mentioned.

The mini suite was far from mini, the bed was comfortable, and the bathroom equally spacious. The staff was very helpful - we were informed before our visit that the restaurant was closed and received a complimentary taxi to The Fat Badger, the restaurant at sister hotel The White Hart, where we very much enjoyed our meal. The complimentary breakfast went beyond the norm by offering plated dishes - three of us had the full Yorkshire, one went for scrambled eggs with salmon on toast - in addition to the continental buffet. All in all, a great place to stay at a reasonable price.
