“Glad we stayed there once - probably won't return”

I am very glad we had a chance to stay at this hotel as I am a great fan of Agatha Christie. The hotel had unique and memorable features such as the Edwardian Breakfast/Dining Room and clunky lift. The location was excellent and there is a huge car park behind the hotel so there was never any issue with parking.
But although I am very happy to have had the experience of staying at the Old Swan - I probably wouldn't go back next time.
Our bedroom was tiny with an unapealing view of a roofed in internal courtyard. As far as I can see there are many rooms like this in the hotel with either rear or internal views. Most of the rooms on the corridor we were on would have been similar. The room was reasonably furnished and clean - and we had a good nights sleep.
Service at breakfast was variable and sometimes we were left sitting for ages before anyone took our order. When breakfast arrived it was good. Coffee was bad come to think of it - but just about the same as most hotels.
I was disappointed with evening meal. It wasn't good value, I wasn't inspired by the menu and there was no atmosphere in the dining room as there were few other customers. Having tried it once I was not minded to go back - we did go back in the end as it was puting with rain and we did not want to get wet - but it was under sufferance.

P.S. As I basically liked the hotel I tried to work out what they can do to make it better. Improving the breakfast service and evening meal would be easy, However the biggest issue was the small bedroom with depressing outlook. I mentally tried to re-design it - but even if they merged 2 rooms into one they couldn't turn these rooms into good rooms. I think the only hope would be to tear down and rebuild the wings to the rear of the hotel.

Room Tip: I assume that a room overlooking the front wuld be better than on at the back - although could be no...

“lovely classic hotel in a good location.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

A very comfortable and clean hotel. Nice bathroom and lovely clean crisp white sheets with a blanket on the bed and plenty of space to hang clothes in the wardrobe which also contained an iron and hairdryer. There was also a kettle, cups, tea and coffee but we didnt find them till the next morning on check out time because it was in a cupboard under the television though there was a bottle of mineral water in the room when we arrived. Didn't have a deal on the room and a meal together so found it a bit pricey in the hotel restaurant, very small portions so we were both still hungry. After dinner went to the bar, drink prices were ok and it was a lovely comfortable room. Staff were very friendly and helpful throughout the hotel so would go back to the old swan just would'nt eat in the restaurant.

“Dissapointed”

The hotel indicated that it was an AA 5* hotel, in my opinion at best 3*. Arrived at 2pm Sunday afternoon only to be told our room would not be ready until 4. Advised to take a walk into the town in the rain. Room was in the 'loft' small with a bathroom which was of very poor design. Possibly owing to the fact we were on a Groupon Voucher. Never again!!!!
The serving of breakfast was slow. After 30 mins wait asked the waitress if we had been forgotten, waited a further 15 minutes for very hard poached egg & undercooked bacon. Several other guests walked out. The simple problem was that they were under staffed, the receptionist doubled up as barman, just like Faulty Towers!
On a positive note the hotel was clean & despite the problems faced by the reception staff amazingly polite. Would I stay again, I don't think so as there is a plethora of good hotels in Harrogate sadly, in my opinion, this isn’t one of them.

“A lovely hotel in a good location.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012 via mobile

My husband and I booked the winter warmer deal with Classic Lodges.
We had a lovely room on the first floor at the front of the hotel. The room was clean and very warm. Bed, breakfast and a 3 course evening meal and a bottle of Prosecco was included for £99 per night for 2 people. We thought it was an amazing deal and it was great value for money.

The evening meal was delicious. On our first evening the service was excellent but there were only a few guests dining. The following evening although the meal was still very good the service was very slow due to lack of staff and a full dining room. A little disappointing, but we felt the hotel and the excellent service the rest of the time was good enough for us to recommend the hotel and we certainly would visit again.
The plasterwork and glass ceiling in the room where we had breakfast was simply beautiful. The hotel itself was full of character, just as we expected.
All in all a lovely stay in a lovely hotel.

“A very central location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

ideally situated within easy walking distance of the town. The staff were excellent, particularly on reception. The room was comfortable and clean and the bathroom facilities were excellent. The hotel was really quiet and peaceful with a pleasant and friendly atmosphere. We had a delightful afternoon tea there. My only criticism is the cooked breakfast which, considering it was cooked to order, was only very average. Someone can't poach eggs ! Undercooked, fatty bacon is not good and the baked beans had been kept waiting on the very hot plates until they were almost glued on !! The coffee was also mediocre.
having said that, we will definately stay there again and will recommend the hotel to friends and family.

Room Tip: Thehotel is well sound proofed , we found it extremely quiet. Plenty of parking on site too.
