I am very glad we had a chance to stay at this hotel as I am a great fan of Agatha Christie. The hotel had unique and memorable features such as the Edwardian Breakfast/Dining Room and clunky lift. The location was excellent and there is a huge car park behind the hotel so there was never any issue with parking.
But although I am very happy to have had the experience of staying at the Old Swan - I probably wouldn't go back next time.
Our bedroom was tiny with an unapealing view of a roofed in internal courtyard. As far as I can see there are many rooms like this in the hotel with either rear or internal views. Most of the rooms on the corridor we were on would have been similar. The room was reasonably furnished and clean - and we had a good nights sleep.
Service at breakfast was variable and sometimes we were left sitting for ages before anyone took our order. When breakfast arrived it was good. Coffee was bad come to think of it - but just about the same as most hotels.
I was disappointed with evening meal. It wasn't good value, I wasn't inspired by the menu and there was no atmosphere in the dining room as there were few other customers. Having tried it once I was not minded to go back - we did go back in the end as it was puting with rain and we did not want to get wet - but it was under sufferance.
P.S. As I basically liked the hotel I tried to work out what they can do to make it better. Improving the breakfast service and evening meal would be easy, However the biggest issue was the small bedroom with depressing outlook. I mentally tried to re-design it - but even if they merged 2 rooms into one they couldn't turn these rooms into good rooms. I think the only hope would be to tear down and rebuild the wings to the rear of the hotel.
