“Well...to be subjective of what you are getting..... not that bad a place...”

I travel all around the country regularly staying in Hilton, Best Western, and lots of other more expensive hotels. We booked in here for a bit of a Valentines night away. I was aware of some of the reviews and know that some people are never happy. Bit of a grumble myself all being told. As Harrogate goes this place is pretty cheap. We booked one night and went for the club room.... you will have to do this if you stay here. We had red and white wine in the room, robes and slippers.... plenty of chocolates, decent fresh fruit. The room could not be faulted at all. Good views as it was on a corner of the building. Everything was clean and the room was warm and cosy. It had expensive linen on a comfy bed. To be honest a lot better than places I have paid £130 a night for one person. We paid £72 which is little more than a B&B.
I can see why people complain about the carpets with tape etc. To be honest the place needed a refurb 20 years ago but just remember these points. The hotel is HUGE. It is alligned to coach trips and ballroom dancing. To be honest I found the place refreshing and interesting. At the end of the day the room was fab even though you were walking through a 1960's relic to get there. People forget to refurbish somewhere like this would probably cost £2 to £3 million if not more. You will not be getting a standard room for £52 then for two people and a club room for £72.
Anyway. The breakfast the next morning was one of the best I have had from any of the other chains of hotels. We got there at about 945 an the food was still all fresh and hot.
I would have to agree with someones comments about the staff on the reception. The girl that checked us in was not that friendly. God sake girl, you are in the hospitality industry put a bit of effort in!.

All in all, you cant go wrong with staying in Harrogate at the Cairn. Book a club room, appreciate the place that it is a right old castle of a place and needs a few million spent. Think of it as a trip back to a bygone era. It has a lovely reception and dining room. As I have said, I have spent much more and got a lot less.

“good traditional hotel - fantastic breakfast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

Cairns is a large traditional hotel offering areasonable value for money stay. It is quite dated and needing some refurbishment in some places but the rooms are pretty good and the club rooms are worth the extra money.
Service is always with a smile and reception is first class
TV reception in room was hopeless but didn't stay in there much
Breakfast is an absolute feast and worth the stay alone - great selection always fresh and hot with good table service as well.
Stayed few times and will go back

Room Tip: some rooms are much better and larger than others - it always pays to check what is available the p...

“As Good As Ever”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

Our recent 4th stay at The Cairn was just as good as the previous 3. The staff were friendly and a number were there on previous visits which is often a good sign of a well managed facility. From start to finish we were made to feel welcome and important. The carvery evening meals were excellent and plentiful and we couldn't fault the breakfast either. It was freezing cold outside and, in some areas, the hotel was also cold and perhaps something should be done to overcome this. However our room was warm and we thoroughly recommend the hotel.

“Reasonable, great breakfast, spotlessly clean.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

Wonderful old hotel, dated in the rooms but really clean. Great breakfast. Amazing areas downstairs with wonderful curtains in the foyer etc. If you want somewhere reasonable to stay which is central to lovely Harrogate then it's a great place. If you are looking for luxury then pay loads more and go across the road to Barcelo.

Room Tip: Room 246 was very quiet.

“What a fabulous show!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

My husband and I stayed in the Cairn hotel Harrogate on the 21/1/2012. thank goodness we only booked the one night..Upon arrival we were told that the room that we had been allocated was just above the dance floor and there was to be an annual dinner dance that evening.. we were asked would we like another room, of course we said yes..The wrong answer!!..we were put on the third floor.. When we opened the door the room and bathroom were freezing, what a welcome..the rads were not working, we sent for help, the porter came and bled the rads..which seemed forever...they never kept at a constant temp..mostly cool..there was a huge gap under and down the side of the door, with light shining through from the corridor, we blocked the sides from draughts with scarves and a cushion..we had drinks from the complimentary tray, to find the milk carton was out of date (17/12/2011)..(only over one month old!)we complained and the receptionist said ' oh dear' and gave us some more!!.not are you both o.k....the window in the bathroom was rotten and the wind was howling in, we tried to block the draught out with the curtains..but feared the window if touched would fall out!..oh dear I must stop now..I could write a book!!the whole place needs upgrading, where do they get those stars!!..The highlight and saviour of our intended visit to Harrogate was the superb Katherine Jenkins show at the International Centre...what a fabulous show and what a fantastic place..thats the Centre I am talking about by the way!!
