I travel all around the country regularly staying in Hilton, Best Western, and lots of other more expensive hotels. We booked in here for a bit of a Valentines night away. I was aware of some of the reviews and know that some people are never happy. Bit of a grumble myself all being told. As Harrogate goes this place is pretty cheap. We booked one night and went for the club room.... you will have to do this if you stay here. We had red and white wine in the room, robes and slippers.... plenty of chocolates, decent fresh fruit. The room could not be faulted at all. Good views as it was on a corner of the building. Everything was clean and the room was warm and cosy. It had expensive linen on a comfy bed. To be honest a lot better than places I have paid £130 a night for one person. We paid £72 which is little more than a B&B.
I can see why people complain about the carpets with tape etc. To be honest the place needed a refurb 20 years ago but just remember these points. The hotel is HUGE. It is alligned to coach trips and ballroom dancing. To be honest I found the place refreshing and interesting. At the end of the day the room was fab even though you were walking through a 1960's relic to get there. People forget to refurbish somewhere like this would probably cost £2 to £3 million if not more. You will not be getting a standard room for £52 then for two people and a club room for £72.
Anyway. The breakfast the next morning was one of the best I have had from any of the other chains of hotels. We got there at about 945 an the food was still all fresh and hot.
I would have to agree with someones comments about the staff on the reception. The girl that checked us in was not that friendly. God sake girl, you are in the hospitality industry put a bit of effort in!.
All in all, you cant go wrong with staying in Harrogate at the Cairn. Book a club room, appreciate the place that it is a right old castle of a place and needs a few million spent. Think of it as a trip back to a bygone era. It has a lovely reception and dining room. As I have said, I have spent much more and got a lot less.
