“Not very posh in Peterborough”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 November 2011

A short break back to where I grew up as a child end ed up with us staying at the Thorpe Lodge Hotel. The room was "tired" and in need of refurbishment - the only downside to our stay. The staff were welcoming and very attentive. This is an important feature to a stay. Breakfasts were adequate and filling - but not exciting! Parking was in front of the hotel, which was set in a quiet area - a fairly short stroll from the city centre. I would go back again.

Room Tip: Ask for a front facing room

“ENJOYED OUR STAY”

5 ladies going to Burghley horse trials! We thought we were really lucky to get booked into a hotel so close to Burghley & to get a single room each at a modest price.
We found the hotel easily & were met by a very pleasant, helpful receptionist. There had been some mishaps at the hotel, including a kitchen fire, so we were offered complimentary continental breakfast during out three-night stay, which was a nice surprise. The hotel is slightly quaint, but the cleanliness of the bedrooms, immaculate bed linen & towels, well stocked tea trays & toiletries in the shower rooms more than offset the small size of the rooms. A friendly barman offered us discounted drinks in the cellar bar as 2 live bands were playing one night. Staff and 'locals' in the hotel were also helpful with advice on restaurants etc. There's also plentiful car parking.

Room Tip: Some rooms are above the bar and can be noisy. Steep stairs to most rooms - suggest disabled or eld...

“I wondered why the reataurant was empty on a Saturday night but now I know.”

I noticed that the restaurant associated with this hotel had recently changed it's name to the Monsoon Tandoori so my daughter and I decided to give it a try.
We were the only customers in the place so service was fairly swift. We ordered our poppadoms and meal. The poppadoms arrived quickly, along with the customary pickle tray. I thought the poppadoms could have been a little crispier-it was as if they had been cooked hours prior and left out on the side. The starters arrived before we had finished our poppadoms and although my daughter enjoyed hers I was disappointed to find that the part that I always leave until last( my favourite part) was not properly cooked. I had ordered the mixed kebab starter and the lamb tikka was definitely very undercooked. I told the waiter who, in all fairness, offered to get me another one which I politely refused.
The waiter came to clear our plates away and he had the cheek to ask us to keep hold of our knives and forks so we could re-use them for the main course-no way! I got an old fashioned look when I told him we wanted clean ones.
The main course arrived and my daughter's was fine-she doesn't like food that is too spicy so we always ask for her dish with no spice. I had ordered a Lamb Tikka Rogon Josh and although it was OK, I didn't eat it all because of how undercooked my lamb tikka was in my starter. I also thought that my plain paratha didn't taste very good. It tasted a little stale.
When the bill arrived I got the shock of my life when I saw how much I had been charged for two pints of Carling lager. £8.50 seemed to be a little steep, especially as in my opinion the suroundings didn't command that sort of price premium.
The final shock came when I presented my card for payment and I was told that an extra 50p was going to be added to my bill because I was paying by card.
So all in all, I was very disappointed. The dining room had a fel of uncleanliness about it, which was confirmed by the dirty tablecloths.
So needless to say, I won't be going there again.

Room Tip: We didn't stay-we just called in for a meal.

“Very Noisy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 April 2011

Map of hotel shows close to train station but is really a taxi ride.Rooms need overhall,ie shower comming off the wall and paint flaking.Very clean. Hotel has entertainment/disco that booms that loud things rattle!!so no sleep as after music stops people leaving continue revellining into the early hours. The couple who are there at breakfast are very welcoming and nothing too much trouble, breakfast excellent.
Felt we were misled over location, noise level and quality of the hotel.

“Would not touch it with a barge pole!”

A group of five couples booked rooms months ago. Two days before arrival the hotel was phoned and they said we could book in from 12.30. When we arrived they no record of our booking and no rooms! Their excuse was that their computer system had crashed two months ago! They did not seem bothered and just gave us the phone number of The Ramada Hotel who were very helpful.
