“Quirky, friendly hotel with a few blemishes”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 April 2011

This hotel is in San Felipe, not Rio Lagartos as some TA pages state. It is also NOWHERE near any of the local attractions listed by TA - most of which seem to be in Monterey, Nuevo Leon.

The hotel is a family run affair and they work hard to make you happy during your stay. The restaurant is open for breakfast and dinner and they will also open for lunch on request. The food is quite acceptable, but not a highlight of the stay.

They offer a variety of rates depending on the position of the room. First, don't stay in the newer annex as it looks a little featureless and forgotten. Secondly, pay the little extra for a sea view. You'll get a great breeze and no direct sun. Some rooms have a small balcony, too.

The level of cleanliness is impressive, but be prepared for quirky layout and decoration - e.g. a bathroom mirror that requires you to stoop down to look in it. One of our beds was also not that great.

So, overall it's a bit of a curate's egg. At $620 it was cheaper and better than some hotels we saw in nearby Rio Lagartos.

“Overnight stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 March 2011

Charming hotel, owners friendly despite our lack of Spanish. We were the only ones staying. Dinner not much options but we loved the fish that was cooked for us. Pancakes next day good to. View from room stunning. Room very od, with 3 beds and a stairwell up to an attic room. Lots of paintings all apparently done by owner. One of naked bodies in our room a bit odd!!!! All clean etc. Absolutely nothing to do though so if you don't like peace and quiet not for you. Good value food.

“OK, but had to stay in annex building with no view ... not much ambience for the price”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 March 2011

Bare bones, but large room with hot water well woren linens and towels. It felt like the place had built 10 years ago and remained untouched except for cleaning since. If it has been thirty dollars, the value would have been about right. A room with a view in the main lodge at fifty would be worth it, even in the basic style we had. Those rooms are however hard to get when its fishing season and all above this amount.
There is an on-site restaraunt, but its hours seem to cater to fisherman, not flamingo watchers like us, so both dinner and breakfast opportunities escaped us. There are a couple of eateries on San Filipe main drag and the one we ate in had as good a selection as was on the hotel's menu and open better hours.

We saw better value and views in other hotels/inns in Rio Lagartos and would suggest bird watchers find something there as you can then walk to your tour boat and need not rush or skip breakfast. Any difference in the atmosphere between San Felipe and Rio Lagartos that once existed seems to have disappeared. Both communities seem safe and pretty clean and have relatively nice waterfront areas.

“simple seaside room, magnificent view”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2010

Simple rooms, a bit outdated. They look a bit shabby and dirty, especialy the bathroom. For only a few pesos extra you get a sea side room with balcony. this viwe will give you the possibility to see the sunset and sunrise in the morning. breakfast and dinner was simple but not bad.

“Hotel San Felipe-well worth the visit!!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 June 2009

We visited the small fishing village of San Felipe while visiting the Bioshpere reserve of Rio Lagartos and a flamingo tour.
Hotel San Felipe is a good choice for lodgings while visiting Rio Lagartos-it is a short drive from the reserve. Rooms are basic but clean and comfortable. They have a.c. but we did not need it as there was a great sea breeze that kept the room very comfortable.
Rooms overlook the lagoon and all of the fishing fleet. The little fishing village of San Felipe is very picturesque-reminds one of the Bahamas of old-small, colorfully painted wooden houses. On the way to San Felipe we stopped at Ek Balam ruins (some of the best preserved stone statuary in all of the Yucatan) and the cenote there for a swim after the ruins.
The flamingo tour is not to be missed-we saw flocks of literally thousands of flamingos and other sea birds (up close) You can take a boat to see the flamingos from San Felipe but the larger flocks are accessed from Rio Lagartos. The trip over to the beach in San Felipe is well worth the 150 peso boat ride-we had the beach totally to ourselves!!!
Not to be missed on a trip to the Yucatan.
There are a few really good seafood restaurants in the village of San Felipe-try Restarant Vaselina (yes, thats right vaseline!!!!) Don't have any idea of how they got that name!!!!
