“Is customer service a lost art?”

In the current climate, I would have thought that any hotelier would go out of their way to make guests feel welcome. With reports of business being down to such an extent, repeat business and word of mouth reviews are, presumably, very important. Unfortunately, the owner of the Arlington lodge doesn't agree with this. We were made to feel that we should be almost apologetic for being allowed to stay in the hotel. Overall, it was one of the most dissapointing and infuriating hotel experiences I have ever had. It's a perfectly nice place to visit, however it's completely over-shadowed by the customer service.
Staying in a tent would have been better.

“Animals on the street would have been treated better”

This hotel is reasonably priced with good food and generally nice rooms. We stayed for two nights. I am not a fussy guest but i was bitterly disappointed with my experience.
The hospitality from the owner/general manager left a lot to be desired. We arrived with a young baby (who incidentally slept for most of his stay) and we immediately felt very unwelcome by the general tone and body language of the proprietor.
This is evidently a serious problem with heating/heating consumption by guests at this hotel. I inadvertly left the front door open when i went out to my car to get a coat within 1 hour of my arrival at the hotel.
My mother-in-law who was sitting in the living room at the time overheard the owner saying to one of his staff "I wish they'd close the [--] door".
This is shocking behaviour and it made us all highly uncomfortable - he could have just asked me politely to close the door.
When i left to to go down to Waterford city with my father-in-law, the owner asked my mother-in-law "are you not going with them?". it had been very clear to us that the owner wanted to switch the gas fire off even through there was no other source of heating in the room.
This was highly inappropriate behavoiur and was a cause of terrible embarrassment to me in front of my parents-in-law.
The general tone and manner of management towards us was intimidating and was completely unacceptable
When i asked as to whether the hotel had a cot, we were told, that there were no facilities for children and also the owner bizarrly quoted "i don't have anything against children" Clearly not the case.
It is almost farcical to think that i actually paid for this treatment. We all endured as not to ruin the weekend for ourselves.

“This hotel does not welcome children”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 November 2009

Arrived at the hotel at approx. 12 noon on the Friday we were welcomed by a pleasant reception area. The girl showed us to our rooms which were very spacious but very cold. After switching on an electric fire in the room she left us. Despite the fire being on for long periods of time the room and bathroom never really warmed up. The rest of the hotel wasnt any warmer. Our daughter and husband had also booked in with their 14 month son. Right from the start it became clear that this hotel does not welcome children. No cots available and we were not made feel welcome in any way particularly by the owner who was extreamly abrupt and rude at times. This was very clear on the Saturday night after a beautiful meal in the resturant when we were in the sitting room the owner came in and told us we were wasting his gas and turned down the fire. It was a freezing cold night and the room was cold. This has to be the coldest hotel we ever stayed in and i will never recommend this hotel or use it again. The positive we took was the food which was first class.

“Luck of the Aussies”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 August 2009

We arrived in Waterford after a 22-hour (read: a lifetime) flight from Sydney, checking in very bedraggled as you can imagine. But the charming staff made us very welcome and suggested restaurants and several fine pubs where we could relax and get our bearings. We were originally booked in for 4 days but changed that to a week, which became ten days, such were the charms of the Arlington Lodge. Highly recommended.

It was a lovely weekend in the sunny south east. The Hotel was great and the staff are very accomodating. Food was very good and the Waterford night life is great fun. I would go back again.
