When our GPS directed us to "Mental hospital road" to get to the Clarion in Sligo, we should have taken it as a sign. Arriving at the hotel was very nice, a beautiful building with great charm and character on a beautiful site.
We were checked in quickly, front desk staff was friendly and efficient. However we got stuck in the back of the hotel 'behind the kitchen' which we didn't hear thankfully. Two elevator rides and a 5-8 minute walk through the hotel (up one floor then back down, don't ask me why) and we were greeted to a somewhat neglected room. Stains on the carpet, pot lights in the bathroom partially hanging out and the electrical panel left open by maintenance. While none of the issues are major, its a collection of little things that paint you a picture about how well the details are looked after.
The brightest spot about our stay was the dinner at the in hotel restaurant. We had arrived late, but the assistant restaurant manager got us in after last seating after checking the the kitchen. He didn't have to do that, but made the effort. Our dinner was very nice all around, good service and good food.
Our sleep was OK, however housekeeping tried to access our room in the morning unannounced through the side access door. (which was not locked, and no knock proceeding it) If I had not shouted as this person tried to enter it would have been much worse.
By time we attended the breakfast buffet it was terrible, @9:30am. (the buffet runs until 10am) Everything was dried out and was the most unappetizing looking food of our entire trip.
Check out was uneventful, other then the hike through the hotel and the two elevator trips.
If you have the choice, go somewhere else, if you do stay here just bypass the breakfast and go to McDonalds, its half the cost and much better.
Room Tip: Ask the front desk to not put you in behind the kitchen. If your room is adjoining, check the locks.
