Just got back from my first ever trip to County Monaghan . Went to attend a family wedding . The bride and Groom had given all the guests a list of b&b's in the area and we initially chose Febane House for its close proximity to the Hillgrove Hotel where the wedding reception was being held . I can tell you honestly what a Great Choice of B+ B it was !
The Owner of Febane House is a lady called Ruth Russell and from the beginning to the end of our stay this lady was an exemplary and very welcoming host . We arived via coach from Dublin Airport - a straight forward journey of 1hr and 40 mins . We phoned Ruth on our arrival at the coach park and she came to pick us up in her car which i thought was an amazing gesture . On arrival at Febane house we found to our delight one of the most beautifull Bungalows i have ever been in my life . It was huge and had been extended and added to over the 37 years or so the Russel family have been in residence .The setting was stunning with a riot of colour from all the plants and flowers in the very well maintained gardens right down to the hillside views and cows in adjoining fields .
We were shown to our room which was a twin with onsuite . The room was very pretty , light and airy with beautifull bedlinen and a great power shower in the ensuite . We also viewed the triple room which was stunning and built into a converted garage . Family friends stayed in here and they too were delighted with their choice .They actually got a little lost and Ruth was willing to go out in her car and meet up with them but due to her great directions they arrived within ten minutes .
Ruth welcomed us into her fantastic family kitchen with a fresh pot of tea , cake and the most amazing shortbread biscuits i have ever tasted in my life . It felt like home in the most wonderful way .
We settled in and that night Ruth took us to the four seasons hotel in her car so we could have a drink and pub meal . She even offered to pick us up again but we decided to get a taxi back . The next morning we awoke to a fabulous breakfast in the conservatory with hillside views . The breakfast was simply incredible . i started with fresh grapefruit and orange segments , followed by a full irish breakfast ( all done on a health grill ) and finished off with toast and marmalade and cup after cup of steaming coffee . We also had fresh orange juice and a full range of cornflakes . I was in heaven . We got ready for the wedding and Ruth even gave us a lift to the Hillgrove hotel .
Now i must comment on the fact that we had a lot of friends staying in the hillgrove hotel and the four seasons both of which we personally visited during our stay . We we'rnt that impressed and a lot of our family members were saying the prices ( 200 euros + a night per room ) for both of these hotels were not in any way justified and that the breakfasts were not up to much .
Yet we had a fantastic time at Febane house and our friends who stayed in other local b+b's were also very impressed by the local hospitality .
We had a great night tho and once again awoke to a fab breaky and one of Ruth Russels Heart warming smiles .
I would reccomend this b+b to anyone - its a great base for travelling around , visiting local family members , attending weddings etc Febane house is spotless , beautifully furnished and yet very homely . Ruth Russel and her family are genuinely nice people who go out of their way to make your stay special . We loved it and hopefully will be going back next year .
