Lichfield House was our first B&B stop on our tour of Southern Ireland. After being lost on the backroads of the Wicklow Mountains all day, we called the B&B, lost at a nearby gas station. The owner told my husband that the policy was to check in by 7pm (it was 7:50pm when we called). He apologized, explained we'd been lost all afternoon and had no cell phones that worked in Europe. Also, we weren't aware of the policy because it was in the fine print on the website we booked through (Gulliver.com). She wouldn't give him directions and said if we weren't there in 10 minutes she was locking the door and wouldn't let us in.
We found Lichfield House and before the owner would let us in, she made us stand outside the door and again lectured us on the policy. After we apologized profusely, again, she let us in. She asked if we'd eaten and when we said no, she told us that was too bad because everything was closed. She recommended two fast food restaurants in town that might be able to serve us.
The room was small and the bathroom was tinier. In the morning, we just wanted to get out of there. While paying, she asked if we were dissatisfied with our stay. I said we were tired and just wanted to leave. She *again* proceeded to lecture me on calling ahead to the next B&B to let them know that we'd be there--whether on time or late.
The only thing about this place that made me the tiniest bit happy was being able to give the dog a much-appreciated belly rub before leaving. NOT a good way to start our tour of Ireland.
