“Friendly & Fun”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 July 2009

We arrived in Kilkenny after a long day of driving and immediately got lost trying to find the B&B. We called Nuala and she offered to meet us in a car park to get us to the B&B. I was stunned by how helpful she was. That sort of instant hospitality and friendliness is almost unheard of in the States. Once there, we were offered hot tea and taken to our spacious room. Nuala provided us with a map of town and directions to get there (without getting lost again). The walk to town was quick and we had a blast in Kilkenny. Be sure to go to The Fields and to Matt the Miller's. All of the pubs were wonderful and the people were equally so. Our breakfast was much needed after a long night out. The place was quiet, convenient, and Nuala's friendliness can't be beat.

“Excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 May 2009

EXTREMELY helpful owners - we were helped to find our luggage, to take our luggage upstairs, and also were taken to city centre
Very welcoming
Family environment
Very Spacious room provided overlooking the front entrance - nice view
Clean
Leisure possibilities - games in the breakfast rooms, front 'garden' to relax in, piano
Flight of steps to 1st floor where there are the guestrooms doesn't have many steps
Quiet environment surrounding the B&B, yet there's a pub nearby + in around 10-15min slow walk one finds himself in city centre
Great stay in Kilkenny at Melrose!
Thanks

“Good but not great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 May 2008

We were met by a very service-minded and friendly owner when we arrived here. The room was spacious and bright, and clean. The shower was not good, there was almost no pressure and the drain seemed quite clogged. The bathroom was permanently damp and we had to leave the window open, which made it quite cold as this was in spring. Paper thin walls meant we heard the other guests and the owner family, but it was quiet at night. Breakfast was quite good, except the tea (it had a thick, grey film on top of it). It was quite a walk in to the centre, which would have been ok if the surroundings had been a bit less dreary. All in all not too bad.

  • Liked — on the outside the house was beautiful, spacious room, friendly owner, good breakfast
  • Disliked — the shower and the long walk to the centre

“Best B&B Experience”

Reviewers: Phyllis & Bernard, Forest Hills, NY.

Very clean, comfortable accommodations; and well-situated near town, MH was as truly a home away from home. Nuala was a gracious, personable and helpful host which made our stay that much more enjoyable. Excellent breakfasts. As B&B's go, this is a #10.

“Quiet and lovely”

I cannot say a bad thing about this B&B. My three traveling companions and I showed up quite early on the day of our reservation (we overestimated travel time!) but Nuala was very obliging, and didn't miss a beat in offering us our rooms, although they were still being prepped.

While we unloaded our bags and set to hit the town, she provided us with a map and loads of information regarding places to visit, shop and eat. She really was the pinnacle of Irish hospitality that everyone seems to hear about. And her children were darling, especially Tara the terror. ;)

The rooms were cozy and the bathrooms well stocked with a myriad of bath supplies. The breakfast the next morning was lovely as well. The location is only a short walk through town, but not short of sights to see along the way. Kilkenny is one of those towns I only gave an overnight stay, but next time I will give it at least 2 and stop by this wonderful B&B again.
