“Beware: This hotel is small and used for local parties, so before you book, you must ask this question...”
We recently stayed at the Keanes of Curraheen while on a golfing holiday with three other couples. It is true that this property is well maintained and most, but not all, rooms have seaside views. The proprietor John is very dedicated and does a remarkable job of running a very comfortable hotel, including small main floor pub and restaurant where the food was very good.
The question you must ask before booking is: does he have a party booked in his restaurant/pub while you are to be staying there? If so, please note that the restaurant/pub are immediately below the bedrooms, and every cheer, note and hiccup will be heard by you as you attempt to sleep. The first night we were there, the restaurant hosted a party of about 60 people for dinner and a dance, complete with amplified music and a singer, and the party went on till after 2am. My husband and I lay in bed in our room, trying to sleep, during 45 minute sets of ABBA, various rock and roll artists, and an a capella set of Irish songs (done quite badly, as the singer was very drunk at this point). We didn't get to sleep until nearly 2:30am, and my husband had to be up for a 7:30 tee time nearby. In the morning, the proprietor John said not a work to us about the party until we asked if there was to be another that coming night. Fortunately for us, the answer was no. There was no apology to us regarding the loud nature of the evening before. John acted as if our inability to sleep was no big deal and he looked like he hoped we were going to ignore the subject with him entirely. My feeling is that he has no business renting out his hotel rooms on the night of such a function, unless to the partiers themselves.
Therefore, before you book, I suggest you email the hotel and find out whether there is a party or function being held there during your stay. If the answer is yes, then you must find another place to stay, otherwise you will not get a wink of sleep.
